CFL Picks: Aug 04

By Mitchell Blair

Give Gary Stern credit.  The new owner of the Montreal Alouettes might make some outlandish statements on his Twitter feed, but it gets people talking. Stern believes his Alouettes will shock the CFL world tonight and hand the unbeaten Winnipeg Blue Bombers their first loss of the year. Bless you Gary, but that just isn’t going to happen.

Yes, I guess the football gods could turn the tables in favour of the Alouettes and if that does happen, it wouldn’t be the first time a visiting team has put in a less than stellar effort in Montreal, ( I wonder why that is by the way) but I just don’t see the Bombers getting their first “L” of the season in this one.

Greg Ellingson likely won’t play for the second straight week, but Zach Collaros didn’t miss him last outing as he threw four touchdowns against Calgary to strengthen the argument as to whether he or Nathan Rourke is the MOP to this point in the season.

Winnipeg is just too good and they are easy on the moneyline. The spread is bouncing between 4.5 and 6.5 points for the Bombers. I think you could make it 7.5 or 8.5 points and still see Winnipeg add to their win total. I will take the defending Grey Cup champs to cover this one. They are 4-0 against the spread and while Montreal has had tough losses, this won’t be one of them.

PICK: Winnipeg -5.5 ( -116) at Bet99

On Friday, the Stampeders are in Ottawa. Again, I don’t see the home team having much of a chance in this one. The Stamps are favoured between 4.5- 5.5 and I think like Winnipeg, you could make it 7.5 or 8.5 and have Calgary win. Ottawa got that much-desired first win that they have been seeking after some tough losses and Caleb Evans is doing a better job filling in for the injured Jeremiah Masoli than I expected, but the bottom line is this team isn’t beating Calgary unless everything goes right for them. Calgary is 6-2 against the spread in their last 8. Make it 7-2 in their last nine

PICK: Calgary -5 (-110) at Coolbet

Saturday brings us a couple of games with one of them being Hamilton at Toronto. I just can’t get a read on these two teams this year. Hamilton has been a huge disappointment to yours truly as I think they are head and shoulders the best team in the East, but they haven’t shown it. Toronto wins a pair against Saskatchewan and then lays an egg at home against Ottawa. I just can’t get a handle on them.  When I look at this one, I think the Ti-Cats can win it, but that’s a big if because Hamilton can’t stop turning over the football allowing some short fields for the opposition. If they do that, they should be able to get the two points even though Toronto is favoured.

PICK: Hamilton ML (+114) at Coolbet

The final game of the week has Edmonton at BC. The Elks are slowly getting better, but they aren’t even close to being in BC’s neighbourhood. Since losing to Winnipeg, BC has bounced back with solid wins over Hamilton and Saskatchewan allowing fewer than 20 in both. I will be stunned if Edmonton is able to score more than 20 in this one. The Lions are favoured by 10.5 and while that is a big spread, I think they can cover especially at home.

PICK: BC -10.5 (-109) at Bet99
