CFL Picks: Aug 19
Another week of CFL play is here with a Friday doubleheader and a Saturday doubleheader as the second half of the season unofficially gets underway. To quote Bon Jovi, we are halfway there and we start the week with two teams living on a prayer when it comes to playoff chances.
When I look at the games this week, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of debate in my somewhat muddled mind as to how things will go so let me share my thoughts with you and hopefully you can cash in with the investment opportunities I present.
Edmonton and Ottawa start the week. If you go back and look at my picks concerning the Elks, you will see that I have not picked them to win, but I have taken them to cover a couple of games. I think this could go the same way. Edmonton is doing some nice things on both sides of the ball, but they certainly aren’t a team I will take straight up. It's been a long season for both teams and with Ottawa being the home team, I would take them with the moneyline, but I like Edmonton to keep it close and cover the spread.
While I am taking Edmonton to cover the spread in the first game Friday night, I am not doing that with the second game. The BC Lions are in Saskatchewan to take on the Riders. Betting against Nathan Rourke? Nope! A couple of weeks ago BC scored the last 28 points of the game at Mosaic to turn a 17-4 deficit into a 32-17 victory. He went into hostile territory and got the job done with a huge fourth quarter. He just continues to put up huge numbers and while Saskatchewan gets a boost on defense by getting defensive lineman Pete Robertson and AC Leonard back, they just aren’t in the same class as BC right now who with all apologies to Winnipeg are the best team in the CFL at this moment.
BC is favoured by 4.5 points and I am all over that.
The Saturday doubleheader begins with Montreal coming off handing Winnipeg their first loss of the year. Can they build some momentum off that victory which arguably was handed to them because of the Bombers kicking woes? They get a Hamilton team that is still a squad I just can’t invest in despite their victory over Toronto at home last week. I need to see more from the Ti-Cats before I can start believing in them. It should be a close game, but I think the Alouettes will be a confident squad after that big win over Hamilton. I’ll go with the Alouettes
The final game has Calgary in Toronto. Some weeks I look at Toronto and think they could beat anyone, other weeks I look at them and wonder how they’ve beat anyone. The Stampeders certainly aren’t in the class of Winnipeg and BC in the East, but they are a good enough team to go on the road and get a win. They are favoured by 2.5 points and that surprises me as I thought Calgary would have been a bigger favourite.
At 2.5 points, this might be and should be a gimme.
Enjoy the games!
