CFL Weekly: Aug 25
Another week of CFL football has arrived and this should be an interesting one. It sucks for the CFL and football fans that we have lost Nathan Rourke for the season as people in BC and the league were starting to put eyes on the product which is needed. That game goes Friday and I’ll talk a little more about it in a bit, but first we have a Western showdown between a Calgary team that is 6-3 with their losses coming to Winnipeg and BC. It looks like Jake Maier is taking over for Bo Levi Mitchell which I admit is a surprise.
Winnipeg is a 6-point favourite and that surprises me even though they are at home because these two teams have played a pair of very close games this year. The Bombers are good at covering, but considering the way Winnipeg has played this year, I expect this game to be one that could come right down to the wire. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bombers win at home, but I think Calgary keeps it close because they are too good. That number is too much for me so I’m taking Calgary to cover.
Toronto and Hamilton meet yet again. I see this being a close one again and I think the double blue are a better team than the Ti-Cats. That being said, Toronto has games where they look so good one week and other weeks they don’t. Matthew Shiltz has been better as a starter than I thought. At the end of the day, I see Toronto squeezing this one out.
The second game on Friday is one that is tough as the BC Lions without Rourke are at home to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Let’s just unpack this one for a second. Rourke is out so Michael O’Connor is in. Cody Fajardo is a quarterback that lost his confidence because his offensive line is a tire-fire. He doesn’t have his top running back in Jamal Morrow and while he gets Kyran Moore back, Duke Williams is out. This isn’t a good situation for the Riders. I don’t know how they can go into BC and expect to defeat the Lions even though they don’t have to face Rourke. BC is just too good. They have come into Regina and beaten the Riders by double digits each time so why should that change now.
The last game has Ottawa in Edmonton. You could go back to my preview last week and the only thing that changes is the game is being played in the Alberta capital and not the Canadian capital. Edmonton hasn’t won at home in over 1000 days. In fact, they haven’t treated their fans at home to a win since becoming the Elks. That should change here.
Enjoy the games!
