CFL Picks: July 07

By Mitchell Blair

Week 5 of the CFL season sees only three games. How three teams can have a bye in a nine-team league baffles me, but it is the CFL right. One of the three games should be a dandy and we will get to that game in a bit, but first let’s talk about the Thursday night game which sees Calgary visit Edmonton.

The Elks got their first win last week upsetting Hamilton in dramatic fashion with a lot of credit going to Canadian quarterback Tre Ford. The rookie didn’t look out of his element at all against Hamilton, and now he is home to take on a Calgary team that hasn’t been beaten yet as they sit 3-0. This will be a different Edmonton team than the one the Stampeders beat two weeks ago.

Ford has given the Elks some energy that I didn’t think they had to start the season. Unless it’s a one time thing, I think he will give Calgary some problems and the Elks have been playing better and better each week. If Calgary is to win this one, they will have to fight, claw and scratch their way to a victory. They go in favoured by 3.5 points. I’m leaning on Edmonton to cover in what should be another game that comes right down to the end.

PICK: Edmonton (+3.5) at -114 on Coolbet

The winless REDBLACKS are in Regina to take on the Riders Friday night. Saskatchewan’s defense is the best in the league.  Pete Robertson has recorded at least one sack in all 4 Saskatchewan games and has a league-leading 7 with teammate Anthony Lanier having four. Linebacker Derrick Moncrief is tied for the league lead in interceptions with three and they are very stingy in allowing teams into the endzone. The line opened with the Riders favoured by 9 and right now you can find them favoured by 7 or 7.5. I like the Riders in this one, but I am questioning why the line is falling, but the moneyline has stayed virtually the same. That being said, take SK on the ML and watch Ottawa go 0-4

PICK: Saskatchewan at -217 on Coolbet

The Bombers are in BC in what is the best game of the year so far.  Nathan Rourke continues to sling the football and he will be in tough against a Winnipeg D that just about let one get away in Toronto Monday. The Bombers aren’t the team on defense they have been in winning back-to-back Grey Cups. I see Rourke being able to move the ball against the Winnipeg D and I see them staying undefeated while handing Winnipeg their first “L” of the season.  With Winnipeg having played Monday, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lions hang one on the champs and record a double-digit win.

PICK: BC at -154 on Bet99
