CFL Picks: July 14
Another week of CFL action is here and it starts with two teams that are a complete mess as Edmonton visits Montreal. I thought the Elks were slowly improving after their Week 1 disaster in BC, but Calgary brought Edmonton right back to square one after beating them down by a score of 49-6 at Commonwealth. To make matters worse, Tre Ford is out meaning Edmonton must resort back to Taylor Cornelius who was a disaster last season. It’s also Edmonton’s 3rd starting QB in five games, not a recipe for success.
Meanwhile, Montreal begins life under new head coach Danny Maciocia. The Alouettes were not that bad under Khari Jones and in a weak Eastern Conference (again), Maciocia could very well be moving in and taking control of the best team; apologies to those of you in Hamilton. Jeshrun Antwi has done a nice job filling in for the injured William Stanback and Trevor Harris has taken charge of this team after stepping in for an ineffective Vernon Adams Junior.
Montreal is the easy pick on the ML, but I am taking them to cover the eight-point spread. Take an Alouettes team that are better than their record shows to add to Edmonton’s misery. Go with them to cover that eight points
Methinks some of us made a mistake last week in not giving the two-time defending Bombers some credit; me included. I thought BC would hand Winnipeg its first loss of the season but instead the young Lions were taught a lesson.
A 4-0 Calgary team now comes in to meet a 5-0 Bombers squad. There isn’t a lot separating these two teams and it has been that way for a while. In the last five games these teams have played, the game has been decided by four or less every time. I don’t see that changing this time around in a game that should be a low-scoring affair.
Taking Calgary on the moneyline isn’t a bad pick, but I like Calgary to cover the four point spread. This could very well be an example of the last team with the ball wins the football game.
The Riders will attempt to put the ugly Garrett Marino incident behind them when they play the Argos at Touchdown Atlantic. Plain and simple, the Riders will be able to add Wolfville, Nova Scotia to the list of cities where they have won a CFL game. Saskatchewan should be able to win this game and win it rather easily. Cody Fajardo has done a terrific job of managing the game and with the 1-2 running punch of Jamal Morrow and Frankie Hickson and a defence that won’t miss Marino, but will miss CFL sack leader Pete Robertson. Defence should win this one for Saskatchewan as the offence will put up enough to get the ”W”
The final game has Ottawa in Hamilton in a battle of winless teams. This game might have more juice if Jeremiah Masoli was coming back to play his former team, but he’s not. The REDBLACKS know Caleb Evans is not the answer thus they had to go out and get Nick Arbuckle from Edmonton. Hamilton is an angry team and they may very well take it out on Ottawa.
Enjoy the games!
