CFL Picks: July 21

By Mitchell Blair

Another week of CFL action is here and it starts with a Thursday night doubleheader, although one couldn’t blame even the most hardcore of CFL fans if they didn’t tune into the first game.

The tough-luck Ottawa REDBLACKS are home to Montreal in a game featuring two teams that have just had a disastrous first-third of the season. Ottawa remains as the only winless team as they are 0-5 straight up (2-3 against the spread). The Alouettes fired their head coach along with their general manager, and now coach Danny Maciocia saying undisciplined penalties was one of the big reasons why. They then went out under Maciocia and had 13 penalties for well over 150 yards as they handed Edmonton a win they didn’t deserve while seeing their record fall to 1-4.

Yes, Ottawa doesn’t have Jeremiah Masoli for the rest of the season and yes, some had Ottawa finishing first in the East this year and yes, I am taking them tonight to beat Montreal. The Alouettes are favoured, but I like the REDBLACKS at home. You can find some good value on Ottawa both on the moneyline and on point spread, but I am going to go with them on the moneyline in a game that I think won’t be decided until the final seconds.

PICK: Ottawa ML (+124) at Bet99

The back half of the doubleheader has the potential to be ugly. Hamilton is in BC to play a Lions team that has already had two byes which is something the CFL schedule maker has to address, but I digress.

As bad as Ottawa has been, Hamilton has been worse. This is a team I thought would be the best in the East again, and that still could happen because the East is once again so bad, but they just haven’t looked right all year.

The Lions have won three of four with the lone loss coming to undefeated Winnipeg squad. Nathan Rourke is still on pace to throw for over 6000 yards this season. No one is talking about this Lions team, but they should be. I think Rourke and the Lions will lay a beatdown on the Ti-Cats. You can find the spread in this game anywhere between 8 to 9.5 points and while we have seen a lot of teams cover the spread this year, that won’t happen here.

PICK: BC Lions -8 (-114) at Coolbet

On Friday, the unbeaten Bombers are in Edmonton to face the Elks. Like the Hamilton-BC game, this one should not be close and I don’t see Edmonton covering the spread. Take Winnipeg

PICK: Winnipeg -7.5 (-114) at Coolbet

On Saturday, the Riders will be home to play Toronto or will they? COVID is decimating the Riders and at the time of writing this, this game is in question. Cody Fajardo may not go at quarterback because of a knee injury and Duke Williams has been suspended for a game. Despite that, Saskatchewan is still favoured. Do yourself a favour and get on the Argos train because I just don’t see the guys in green winning this one if the game is played.

PICK: Toronto ML (+131) at Bet99
