CFL Picks: June 09

by Mitchell Blair

And awayyyyyyy we go. The 2022 CFL season begins in Calgary Thursday night with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers looking to hoist the Grey Cup high for a 3rd straight year this November in Regina.

The first game of the year is an interesting one as the Montreal Alouettes are in Calgary to take on the Stampeders with the home team being a 3.5 point favourite. It is the opening game of the season, but I have questions for both of these teams and they mainly revolve around the quarterback.

Vernon Adams Junior was tabbed as the starter by head coach Khari Jones. I keep waiting for VA to elevate his game but despite the opportunities he has been given, he has not been able to. With Trevor Harris serving as the backup, one has to think Adams doesn’t have a long leash especially when you consider the team did not look crisp in the pre-season with him under center.  Head Coach Khari Jones wants to give Adams every chance to succeed and he may end up dying on that hill.  Adams needs to reward Jones for giving him a vote of confidence.

On the other sideline you have Bo Levi Mitchell. He is not the Bo Levi Mitchell he used to be, but the team says he is 100 percent. Despite blasting both BC and Edmonton in the pre-season, Bo Levi did not put up encouraging numbers, leaving some to wonder how much patience Head Coach Dave Dickenson will have, and if he will insert Jake Maier who did look like the better guy in the pre-season.

The other question going into this game is regarding the new rules designed to improve offence. I am extremely skeptical of hash marks being moved in resulting in higher-scoring games as defensive coordinators around the league are smart enough to adjust. But as always, time will tell.

With it being Week 1 of the season, I don’t see this game being a pretty one, but I do see both defences being ready against two quarterbacks who start the year with the microscope on them. At the end of the night though, I see the Stampeders winning whether it be with just one or two quarterbacks because they seem to be the better team in all three phases, and I see them covering the 3.5 point spread.

PICK: Calgary (-3.5) -114 at Bet99

Other Week 1 CFL picks I am looking at:

Winnipeg is a 9.5 point favourite against the REDBLACKS at home. It’s a big spread, but while the Bombers don’t have guys like Andrew Harris, Kenny Lawler, Jonathan Kongbo and Steven Richardson, they should still be able to handle Ottawa easily. The REDBLACKS may be 5-1-1 in their last seven openers, but they will take an L in this one.

PICK:  Winnipeg (-9.5) -122 at Bet99

Edmonton is at BC.  Like he had when he took over in Saskatchewan, he has another huge mess to clean up. It will be a long year in Edmonton.

PICK:  BC (-3.5) -116 at Bet99

Saskatchewan is home to Hamilton in a game featuring what I think will be two very good defences. This should be the best game of the week with the first team getting to 21 probably winning.

PICK:  Under 47.5 (-112) at Bet99
