CFL Picks: June 22

By Mitchell Blair

Week 3 of the CFL season starts in Montreal Thursday night. While 2-0 ATS, the Alouettes are in need of a win as they are 0-2 putting the pressure firmly on head coach Khari Jones as Montreal finally gets to play at home against a 2-0 Saskatchewan team. Plain and simple, this game should be Montreal’s for the taking even though the Riders are favoured.

Saskatchewan played a tough game in Edmonton on Saturday. They lost centre and team leader Dan Clark with a broken leg and now they have to head East on what is a short week of preparation as they only had one practice to get ready for their eastern foes.

With Vernon Adams Junior out after testing positive for COVID, Trevor Harris starts for Montreal, but the veteran QB knows his way around the CFL so the dropoff from Harris to Adams if there is one should not be large. Harris won’t have Jake Wieneke to throw to as he has a hamstring injury, but Montreal should still have enough as far as I’m concerned to slug out a victory in what should be a low-scoring affair. This could very well be one of those first teams to 21 wins the football game.

The Riders are favoured, but the money for me is with Montreal as there just seem to be too many negatives being thrown in front of the green-and-white. If this Saskatchewan boy can bet against the Riders, you can too.

PICK: Montreal at +155 on Bet99

Elsewhere in Week 3, Hamilton is in Winnipeg for a Grey Cup rematch Friday night. The defending two-time champs are 2-0, but they did struggle somewhat to beat an Ottawa team that I may have to review as they are better than what I thought they would be while the Ti-Cats are a disappointing 0-2. Hamilton can’t stop turning over the football and they are coming off a tough loss at home against Calgary where they let the Stampeders win a game they had no right to after collapsing in the second half. To put it mildly, Hamilton needs to be better, but in a way so does Winnipeg. The Bombers certainly aren’t the same team they were last year, but I expected more out of them in the first two weeks. I think the Winnipeg of old returns in this one meaning the struggles of Dane Evans and the Ti-Cats continues.

PICK:  Winnipeg ( -4.5) at -114 on Coolbet

Edmonton is in Calgary Saturday night. As I’ve said before, it is going to be a long year in Edmonton and while the performance at home against Saskatchewan in Week 2 was much better than the disaster that was Week 1, the Elks can’t expect to go to Calgary and win.  The Stamps are huge favourites on the moneyline and they should be. I am looking more at the over/under here. CFL games have shown us again early on that we aren’t going to see those 34-31 shootouts that the league wants and while I think some points will be put up here, that 49.5 point mark has me screaming the under but not by much.

PICK: Under 49.5 at -108 on Bet99

The other game this week has Toronto at BC. The money seems to be on the Lions here and I question that. Yes, Nathan Rourke had a huge opening week, but that was against a very bad Elks team. Toronto provides a stiffer challenge and they now have some film on the Canadian quarterback to look at. Yes, Eastern teams don’t play very well on the west coast, but I don’t think we saw the real BC team in Week 1. We have seen some close games in the CFL in the first two weeks and this could be another game that comes right down to the end before we have a final.

I like the Argos to win, but I love them to cover the 4.5 point spread.

PICK:  Toronto (+4.5) at -104 on Coolbet

Enjoy the games and hope we don’t see too many Navage commercials!  Does anyone buy those things?
