CFL Picks: June 30

By Mitchell Blair

The CFL’s biggest star this season and arguably its best team after three weeks is on the field Thursday night to start Week 4.

Who had the BC Lions at 2-0 and more importantly, who had them outscoring their opposition 103-18 in those two games? The Lions certainly have me rethinking how good they are and there is no doubt the reason for what we have seen has been the play of Nathan Rourke. It is only two games, but the Canadian quarterback has people turning their heads with his play. He is completing almost 90 percent of his passes while throwing for 718 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Lions are in Ottawa this week to meet a REDBLACKS team that is 0-2 after a pair of tough games against Winnipeg and is coming off a bye week.

As good as BC has been, I am leaning towards the home team. Like last week for Saskatchewan, it is a short week for the Lions after their win Saturday night at home and they now have to travel East for this one. Ottawa has been able to move the ball with Jeremiah Masoli as they are number two in the CFL at 412.5 yards a game. While the Lions are favoured, I am taking Ottawa on the ML in a game that I think could be outstanding and high-scoring which is something the CFL has desperately lacked.

PICK: Ottawa at +124 on Coolbet

Other games and thoughts this weekend:

Edmonton is in Hamilton on Friday for a Canada Day battle. Both teams come into this game at 0-3. That isn’t surprising when you look at the Elks who have been getting better and better each week, but to see Hamilton at 0-3 is shocking. Dane Evans has struggled out of the gate and it shows as he has thrown six picks in the three games as has his counterpart Nick Arbuckle.

This game has defensive struggle written all over it. Hamilton should be good enough to win the contest, but I am going with the under here.

PICK: Under 46.5 at -110 on Coolbet

After beating Saskatchewan by 24 points in Montreal last week, the two teams meet again at Mosaic Stadium as the green guys start a stretch of games that will see four of five played at home. Plain and simple, I don’t think the Alouettes can do what they did last week. A full week of preparation and a sense of anger for what happened last week will have Saskatchewan in a much better frame of mind when they take the field.

PICK:  Saskatchewan at -204 at Bet99

On Monday, the Bombers will be in Toronto as Andrew Harris plays his first game against the team he won two Grey Cups with. Toronto will be better than the team that got smoked in BC, but they won’t be in a position to win even with a fired-up Harris. The Bombers D has allowed one TD in 41 posssessions and that one TD came early in Week 1. They have also allowed fewer than 20 points in 13 of their last 17 games and are 12-1 in that timeframe.

PICK: Winnipeg at -208 on Coolbet
