Belgian Grand Prix Qualifying and Race Preview: August 26

By Michael Spiegel

After a long summer break, Formula 1 is finally back, and we are ready to get racing again. This weekend features one of the most historic and iconic races on the F1 calendar at Spa. Last year's race at Spa was met with controversy after only one lap of racing was conducted under the safety car due to inclement weather. Max Verstappen would take the win, followed by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton; although it’s hard to really consider what happened last year to be much of a race at all. Hopefully, this time around we get to see a full race with all the excitement that a track like Spa has to offer.

As we head towards the back half of the F1 schedule; the pair of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have Red Bull almost 100 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship. Verstappen also leads Charles Leclerc by 80 points in the Driver’s championship and he hopes to continue to build up that separation from Leclerc to solidify a second straight title.

My Picks:

Max Verstappen – Fastest Qualifier +137 (bet365): Verstappen seems to always find a way to get himself into pole position. He has undoubtedly been the fastest driver on the track this year and coming out of the summer break I expect him to continue that trend. At anything plus money for Verstappen to win a race or be the fastest qualifier, that’s a bet I’d take any day.

George Russell – Fastest Qualifier +1200 (Sports Interaction): A long shot here but Russell has been one of the most consistent drivers on the grid this season. If something goes wrong for Red Bull or Ferrari, I could see Russell coming along and stealing that pole position. At +1200, not a bad bet for a guy who’s fourth in the Driver’s standings right now and looking to make up some ground on those ahead of him.

George Russell – Podium Finish +150 (Sports Interaction): Russell got his first podium in Formula 1 at Spa last year, albeit a little bit underwhelming driving under a safety car. Russell has shown time and again that he can perform this year in the Mercedes. Aside from one DNF, he hasn’t finished lower than fifth on the grid and he has back-to-back podiums going into the summer break. I think he’ll come flying out of the gate this weekend and put in another solid performance.

Charles Leclerc – Race Winner +700 (DraftKings): At some point, the woes for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have to end. Leclerc has 3 race wins under his belt this season, and after a brief reset during the summer break, I think he’ll come out firing. +700 for the second-place driver in the Driver’s championship right now is terrific value. Definitely a bet to consider for this weekend.
