British Grand Prix: July 02

By Michael Spiegel

Red Bull has been incredible since they managed to fix their reliability issues from early in the season. The team has won the last six races, and Verstappen has won five. Max Verstappen has been dominating this season, winning six of nine races this year, and is beginning to run away with the Drivers Championship. However, this weekend does seem different.

Ferrari seems to be closing in on Red Bull, with Carlos Sainz posting a very promising time in FP2 yesterday. Sainz led the pack; and don’t call it a comeback, Lewis Hamilton finished P2. It looks as though Mercedes are beginning to solve some of their problems and potentially turn this Constructors title into a three-way fight. If Mercedes can give Hamilton a fighting chance, I wouldn’t want to be racing against the seven-time world champion who has shown time and again what he is capable of.

Both Mercedes drivers are going to be amped to get racing as they are both competing in their home races. This will be George Russell’s first home Grand Prix with a fighting chance of a win, whereas Hamilton is very familiar with what winning feels like at Silverstone. Hamilton holds the record for most wins at Silverstone and has won here seven of the last nine races, including last year. Never count Hamilton out when he’s on track here, especially when it appears that Mercedes have made some significant improvements to his car.

Hamilton’s rival from last season, Max Verstappen, will be looking for revenge after he and Hamilton collided on the opening lap of Silverstone last year. Even though Verstappen says that there are “no hard feelings” (Max Verstappen says he has 'no hard feelings' with Lewis Hamilton over their 2021 British GP crash | Daily Mail Online) from last year’s race, he will be looking to claim victory this weekend after a hard impact crash in 2021. While Hamilton and Verstappen are not as close in the standings as they were last year, there is still plenty of time for Mercedes to claw their way back into this year’s Drivers and Constructors titles, and they’ll be looking to start this weekend.

My Picks: Big Weekend for the Brits:

Kevin Magnussen – First Driver to Retire +1400 (bet365): Starting off with a bit of a fun bet, I have Kevin Magnussen as the first driver to retire on Sunday. After Haas’ seemingly great start to the season, they have struggled as of late, especially Magnussen. He has 3 DNFs over his last 5 races and both of his finishes came in the bottom five.

Lando Norris – Podium Finish +750 (bet365): Some good value to be made here, Lando has two top-five finishes this season, including one podium. While he did struggle in Montreal a few weekends ago, Lando’s practice times have looked very strong, including a P3 finish in FP2. With this being his home Grand Prix, I think he’ll land on the podium on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton – Race Winner +750 (bet365): Hamilton seems to feel much more comfortable in his new and improved Mercedes. He spoke highly of the improvements made to the car over the past few weeks and it would be quite the feel-good story to see him win at home for the ninth time.

George Russell – Race Winner +1400 (bet365): This one is quite the stretch, but Russell has finished top five in every single race this season. He has been phenomenal in his first season with Mercedes and is proving what all the hype was about. With these odds, not a bad idea to throw some money on him getting his first win with Mercedes at his home Grand Prix.
