Picks of the Day: Formula One

By Stefan Luciani

We are back ladies and gentlemen, but I’m not here to spit some nonsense about a runline because contrary to prior belief, I’m not just a one-trick pony. I have maybe one or two other tricks at best.

Formula One makes its return to Montreal for the first Canadian Grand Prix since back in 2019 and fans and drivers alike are thrilled. But as usual for us Canadians, we’re well aware of the factor our bizarre weather tends to have on our day-to-day lives. Teams arrived at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve Thursday to thunderous clouds and an absolute downpour. This was followed Friday by beautiful clear skies until all the running had finished up for the day. Then fans were treated to another heavy shower as they were leaving the track. Qualifying gets going today and the radar suggests there could be some more light rain on the itinerary for the sessions which always tends to mix things up. There is also a chance the weather passes before the green light, so really, who knows?

Now, it’s probably fitting I’m a Ferrari fan personally (they’re quite literally the Toronto Maple Leafs of Formula One) as they have blown a 40+ point lead in both the constructor’s and driver’s championships as the Red Bull’s of both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are currently sitting one and two in the standings respectively. So, my first pick for the day, logically is going to be Ferrari taking qualifying fastest thanks to Charles Leclerc. The odds seem in our favour for this one as Betway currently has him sitting as the underdog behind defending champ Verstappen @ +225. Leclerc has proven time and time again throughout his young career that there is nobody on the grid faster than him over one lap. He has picked up six pole positions thus far this year, with his race day issues often coming through no fault of his own. His retirement last week from the lead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has resulted in him taking a whole new power unit and components this week resulting in a grid penalty for him, so he’s out of contention for pole position itself, but will certainly try to qualify fastest to limit the damage done from his 10-place penalty.

Pick: Charles Leclerc Fastest Qualifier @ +225 (Betway)

Other Notable Pick:

Qualifying Winning Margin - 0.100-0.250 @ +175 (Betway): Out of the nine races we’ve had this season so far, only four of them have been outside of this winning margin with only one of them significantly away from it. It’ll be interesting to see how the new directives surrounding the handling of porpoising come into effect, but qualifying is usually pretty close at the top between Red Bull and Ferrari, so I think this is a no brainer.
