Dutch Grand Prix Qualifying and Race Preview: September 2, 2022

By Michael Spiegel

The Dutch Grand Prix takes place this weekend with all eyes on Max Verstappen as he partakes in his home race. The Dutch Grand Prix made its way back to Zandvoort for the first time since 1985 last year, and Max Verstappen excelled in front of his home crowd. I’m expecting more of the same from him this weekend. With seemingly nobody being able to catch Verstappen, he has been as dominant as one can be this year. Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of Max’s, it’s hard to deny how incredible his race was last weekend, going from 14th on the grid (after taking a new power unit) to first.

On another note, George Russell continues to be Mr. Consistency for Mercedes and is outduelling his teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Last weekend at Spa he continued to add to his phenomenal streak of top 5 finishes in the Mercedes car, Russell has shown that he clearly deserves to have that seat. While I’m not betting on his results this weekend as the sportsbooks seem to have figured that a top 5 finish is almost guaranteed at this point (with the best odds for a top 6 from Russell being -380), he will definitely be someone to keep an eye on this weekend to see if he can continue the tremendous pace that he has had this season.

My Picks:

Max Verstappen – Fastest Qualifier, Fastest Lap, and Win Race +250 (bet365): I’m expecting tremendous results from the Dutchman this weekend. Pole position, fastest lap, and a race win is a combination that is never out of the question for Verstappen, but he’ll have even more motivation this weekend to please his home crowd. That’s a lot to ask for at just +250, however, I think if anyone’s capable of doing it it’s Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton – Podium Finish +162 (bet365): Coming off of an unfortunate DNF for Lewis at Spa, he’ll be looking to get right back into the mix. With five straight podium finishes going into the summer break, I think the always resilient Hamilton will be ready to stand up on the podium this weekend.

Carlos Sainz – Race Winner +1000 (FanDuel): If something happens with Verstappen’s race, taking Carlos Sainz at +1000 is a pretty good option. After finishing third last weekend, and quietly turning in a very good effort, I think Sainz is a pretty good backup plan if things don’t work out for Verstappen. Despite Ferrari’s misfortunes this year, Sainz has seven podium finishes this season including the first race win of his career.
