Golf Picks: July 05 - Genesis Scottish Open

The Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland

By Marc Tersigni

The Open Championship is one week away, and as usual the big names have arrived in the UK early to tee it up this week at the Genesis Scottish Open. After a horrifying field last week at the John Deere Classic (I watched less than 5 minutes of that event), we will be treated this week to a star-studded field. 14 of the top 15 players in the world will be participating. This includes the likes of Rahm, Scheffler, JT, Morikawa, Spieth, Cantlay, Zalatoris and others. Of the top-15, the only golfer absent will be Rory. We will miss him, but come on, this field is lights out. I personally can’t wait for this tournament to begin. Remember folks, it's being played in Scotland, so get ready for an early start on Thursday morning (2:15 am EST).

The Favourites

The top 3 favourites this week include:

  1. Jon Rahm - Best price: +1200 at bet365
  2. Scottie Scheffler - Best price: +1400 at BetMGM
  3. Justin Thomas - Best price: +1400 at BetMGM

My Pick:

My pick to win the Genesis Scottish Open this week is Jordan Spieth. I am taking him despite missing the cut in his last tournament (The Travelers). I feel like a change of scenery will be good for Jordan. He has been battling a new swing change over the last few seasons, and has had mixed results. He does have a win from earlier this season at the RBC Heritage, but he has not played like the Jordan Spieth that spoiled us throughout the early parts of his career.

Looking at his SG stats, we can see that Jordan’s putting continues to be the biggest shocker. Five years ago, there was no one better with the putter, he was a magician. If he has any hope of rising to become the best player on the planet again, he must putt like the Jordan of old.

Spieth does have some success in the UK. He won the 2017 Open Championship which was held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Around the greens this week I have no concerns. Off the tee however, Jordan has been known to hit quite a few pull-hooks, something that can get him into trouble. If he can avoid the big misses, and if he can heat up his putter, I think there is tremendous value in taking Spieth this week.

My Pick: Jordan Spieth to win the Genesis Scottish Open +3300 at bet365
