Golf Picks: June 08 - The RBC Canadian Open

By Marc Tersigni

After a two year hiatus, The PGA Tour heads North of the border this week, as the RBC Canadian Open will take place in Toronto, Ontario. We have a great field this week including world #1 Scottie Scheffler, and others such as Justin Thomas, Cameron Smith and defending champion Rory McIlroy. There are sure to be plenty of Canadians in the field including top Canuck Corey Conners. He has played some great golf this year, and it would not surprise me to find his name on the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. The last time a Canadian won the Canadian Open was Pat Fletcher back in 1954; so it's been a while to say the least.

The Canadian Open continues to rotate the location of the national Championship. This year, the tournament will be played at the St. George’s Golf & Country Club for the sixth time in the tournament’s history. The last time St George’s hosted was back in 2010 when Carl Petterson took home the hardware. This week, the course will play to a par-70 and 7014 yards. I expect the players to dominate the course this week; with all the rain in the forecast, the soft greens are sure to make for target practice for some of the world’s best.

The Favourites

The top 3 favourites this week include:

  1. Scottie Scheffler - Best price: +850 at BetRivers
  2. Justin Thomas - Best price: +1000 at bet365
  3. Rory McIlroy - Best price: +1000 at BetMGM

My Outright Winner:

Call it wishful thinking, call me a homer, call it whatever you want; but I will be taking Corey Conners to win the RBC Canadian Open. The Ontario native is one of the world’s best playing on a course that he is familiar with. Corey is coming off a great Memorial tournament. He was never on the leaderboard, but he played solid golf throughout the week (not including a 3-putt from 2 feet on Saturday). This tournament means alot to him, and I hope he can deliver.

My pick - Corey Conners +2200 at bet365.

Tournament Match-ups

Justin Thomas has been too inconsistent this year. That being said, I’m sure he’ll take a few poor performances when they are coupled with a PGA Championship. Scottie Schefller on the other hand is the clear and obvious golfer of the year. I have no reason to be concerned about taking Scheffler over Thomas this week. If Scheffler finishes out of the Top 10, I’d be surprised.

Pick: Scheffler -117 over Thomas (tie loses) at bet365

Longshots at great value

Johnattan Vegas - +6600 - He managed to have a great tournament last week until he posted a dreadful 81 on Sunday. Vegas has made the cut in 6 of his last 7 tournaments while posting three top 20s. I’ll sprinkle him at 66-1 on BetRivers.
