Golf Picks: June 21 - The Travelers Championship

By Marc Tersigni

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am exhausted. We were treated to an exciting US Open last week, and I must have watched 40 hours of golf over a four day stretch. I hope you all read my picks last week and cashed in, as we hit another outright winner with Matthew Fitzpatrick. I was a little worried after his tee shot on 18 found the fairway bunker, but a beautiful recovery shot eased the stress, and the comfortable 2-putt was enough to capture the championship.

This week we head to Connecticut and have one of the most star-studded fields of the year. If you don’t think this has anything to do with the LIV tour playing next week in Portland, you must be living under a rock. Scheffler, Rory, JT, Burns, Cantlay, Spieth, Xander… shall I go on? We have never seen a field like this at the Travelers; I wouldn't be surprised if the PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan called a few of the players and asked them to tee it up this week.

The TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest courses on tour. At only 6827 yards (par 70), this course will give many of the shorter hitters a fighter’s chance. This tournament tends to give up plenty of birdies, and I would not be surprised to see the winning score reach upwards of 15 under par this week. As I always caution, when a course is this vulnerable, be careful when laying a steep price with the favourites.

The Favourites

The top 3 favourites this week include:

  1. Rory Mcilroy - Best price:+1000 at BetVictor

If your guy hits, make sure you get top dollar for it.

Longshots at Great Value

Jhonattan Vegas +14000 at bet365 - It's no secret that Vegas hasn’t played his best golf this year. He is known as a streaky golfer, and I’m trying to bet on him before the hot streak begins. 140-1 is nothing to sneeze at. Throw a few dollars on him and let’s hope this is the week he cashes.

Brian Harman +6000 at BetMGM -  Harman had nice rounds on Thursday and Friday at the US Open. The weekend however was a much different story. He wasn't able to handle the much tougher conditions as well as some of the other golfers. The Travelers however is nothing like the US Open. A course like this gives Brian a much better chance at competing.

My Outright Winner:

My outright winner is a top 10 talent who hasn't been playing much golf this year. Patrick Cantlay has only teed it up four times in the last two months. In those four tournaments he has a win at the Zurich Classic, a missed cut (PGA Championship), a T-3 at the Memorial and last week he finished T-14 at the US Open.

After making the cut on the number at the US Open, Cantlay was able to climb the standings and finish T-14 after a great weekend of golf in some tough conditions. I think his weekend play will leak into this week at the Travelers Championship. Patrick has played this tournament multiple times over the last five years, and he has never finished outside the top 15. I think this is the year he breaks through and takes home the championship.

My pick: Patrick Cantlay to win the Travelers +1600 at BetMGM
