Travelers Championship Preview: June 20

By Michael Spiegel

After we were treated to a fantastic U.S. Open last weekend, we head to Connecticut this weekend for the Travelers Championship. Rory McIlroy is the betting favourite to win the Travelers this weekend as of right now, at +1047 (Pinnacle). McIlroy, coming off a win at the Canadian Open and a fifth-place finish at the U.S. Open, has been playing fantastic golf as of late. He has finished in the top ten in five of his last six outings, including four top-five performances. He is arguably the hottest golfer on tour right now and it’s not much of a surprise to see him as the favourite this weekend.

A golfer who caught my eye for this upcoming weekend is Brian Harman. Despite his lacklustre outings recently, he has had tremendous success at the Travelers including a fifth-place finish last year and finishing in the top 10 in four of his last seven at River Highlands. Harman seems to love playing here and I think he’ll be looking to add on to his success from last year with another top-tier performance this weekend. Another golfer who struggled last weekend and surprisingly failed to make the cut is Sungjae Im. Prior to that, he had gone five straight finishing twenty-first or better. I think River Highlands gives him an opportunity to bounce back and have a strong weekend, perhaps competing for a victory.

My Picks:

Brian Harman – Tournament Winner +5119 (Pinnacle): Call it a funny feeling, but with Harman’s success at this course, I’m taking a long shot on him to finally come out on top here. With the odds the way they are, even a small wager could be a massive payout.

Sungjae Im – Top 5 Finish +550 (Barstool): I’m is a fantastic golfer and I think he’ll be able to put his skills on display this weekend. Fairly decent value for a golfer of this calibre to finish in the top 5.

Marc Leishman – Top 10 Finish +500 (Barstool): Marc Leishman has six top 25 finishes at the Travelers, and despite his struggles in the month of May, he looked fantastic at the U.S. Open last weekend, finishing fourteenth. With his history at this course, and the way he looked last weekend, there is definitely some great value in a top 10 finish this weekend.

Mackenzie Hughes - Top 20 Finish +400 (Barstool): Despite struggling in recent months, Hughes has been steadily improving his game throughout June. Most recently, Hughes had a twenty-fourth place finish at the U.S. Open last weekend, and I think he is poised to continue his recent improvements with a top 20 finish this weekend.
