John Deere Classic Preview: June 29

By Michael Spiegel

After some last hole drama at the Travelers on Sunday; we go to Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic this weekend. Webb Simpson comes into this weekend as the tournament favourite after finishing tied for 13th at the Travelers. Simpson had a fantastic start to his round last weekend, but unfortunately, his struggles on Sunday left him outside of the top 10. Simpson is favoured at around +1400 by most sportsbooks for this weekend, but despite the odds being in his favour, I can’t see any clear winner for this weekend which should make it an exciting watch.

My Picks:

Charles Howell III – Top 10 Finish +300 (BetVictor): The recently turned 43-year-old is coming off a T35 at the Travelers. After starting the tournament on fire, shooting a 64 on Thursday (the same as Simpson), Howell didn't improve upon his score on Saturday and Sunday, leading to him finishing outside the top 20. Look for him to have some more success this weekend and hopefully continue his low scores through Sunday.

Lucas Glover – Top 10 Finish +550 (BetVictor): Last year's champion, Glover has been struggling as of late. Only having one top 10 this season, I think he’ll continue upon his success at Deere Run and finish in the Top 10 again, something that he did in both of his two previous outings here.

Sahith Theegala – Top 5 Finish +600 (BetVictor): Just a cruel finish to Theegala’s round on Sunday after a double bogey on 18 that opened the door for Xander Schauffele to cruise to victory. With two top-fives in his last 3 tournaments, I think Theegala will be looking to avenge his crumble from Sunday with another strong outing this weekend.

Denny McCarthy – Top 5 Finish +650 (BetVictor): McCarthy struggled last weekend and was unable to make the cut. Despite this, I am looking for him to have a strong outing here. He has two top 10 finishes in his last three, and he has four this season. Even with his struggles at the Travelers, he should be able to pick up where he left off with a T7 at the U.S. Open and have a strong outing at Deere Run.

Adam Svensson – Tournament Winner +5000 (BetVictor): The Canadian has back-to-back top 25 finishes, and even though he doesn’t have a career victory, I’m taking a long shot on him to win this weekend. I’m encouraged by what I saw from him this past weekend at the Travelers. After starting the weekend off with a 71 on Thursday, setting him up to miss the cut, he bounced back with an incredible 64 on Friday. His combined Friday and Saturday scores of -10 are extremely encouraging for him going into this weekend, and I’ll be looking for him to continue that success at Deere Run.
