Golf Picks: May 17 - The PGA Championship

By Marc Tersigni

Enough of these Mickey Mouse events, the second major of the year is finally upon us; the PGA Championship. This week we head to Tulsa, OK for what is sure to be a drama filled weekend. Currently, the field includes 97 of the top 100 ranked golfers in the world. The storylines this week are endless. Tiger has been at the course prepping for the last two weeks, defending PGA Champion Phil Mickelson has withdrawn amidst the Saudi Tour controversy, Jordan Spieth will chase the career Grand Slam after a 2nd place finish last week, and Scottie Scheffler will try to extend his improbable 2022 golf season with back-to back major victories.

The Course

The Championship Course at Southern Hills is a golfer’s dream. This par-70 course will be sure to challenge the best golfers in the world. The last time Southern Hills hosted a major was the 2007 PGA Championship. Who won that event? None other than Tiger Woods (his 13th major title). Since then, the course has gone through some changes. In 2007 the course played 7131 yards. Like all of the great courses in the last few decades, it has since been extended. This week, the course will total 7481 yards, and has changed from a par-71 to a par-70. As a result of the course's length, as well as a 625+ yard par-5, it will be difficult for the low to medium length hitters to contend this week. Longshots at Great Value

As I stated earlier, I can’t see the shorter hitters contending this week. So even all of my dark horses can still get the ball out there.

Patrick Reed +14000 - Reed hasn't played up to his abilities for a good year now. But at 140-to-1 (bet365), I will definitely be putting a few dollars on him to snap out of it. He possesses all of the tools, and a few tricks up his sleeve if you know what I mean.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout +16500 -  Bez is coming off a solid performance at the AT&T Byron Nelson where he finished T-12 including a round of 64 on Saturday. Obviously the PGA Championship will score much harder, but I think Bez has a shot to contend. You can find him at 165-to-1 on Pinnacle.

Adam Hadwin +20000 - Hadwin has had an up-and-down year thus far. He underwent a swing change last season and continues to improve on his comfortability each week. I do not expect  him to have a legit chance to win, but at 200-to-1 I‘m ok with tossing a few dollars on him. You can find this line at bet365.

My Tournament Winner:

It has been nearly 8 years since Rory McIlroy has won his last major golf tournament. For a golfer that possesses as much raw talent as Rory, that’s just too long of a stretch. Both Tiger (46 years old) and Phil (51 years old) have won majors more recently than Rory; and that’s just insane. It's been his opening rounds that have really set him back in recent years. I’m not sure if you can bottle momentum from a tournament that took place 4 weeks ago; but if you could, Rory could be the story this week. His fourth round of the Masters reminded us all of what Rory is capable of. He was absolutely lights out; highlight after highlight including holing out from the green-side bunker on 18 to shoot a 64 on Sunday. For his sake, I hope he was able to bottle some of that magic.

My pick: Rory Mcilroy to win the PGA Championship +1600 at BetVictor.

Tournament Match-ups

My absolute favourite Tournament Match-up (also known as a 72 hole match bet) is the Canadian Corey Conners -110 over Tony Finau. Corey has been a top 20 golfer for the better part of two years now, while Finau continues to struggle. The man has just one Top-10 this season. Conners on the other hand continues to contend in all the big events. I am willing to bet that this trend continues. At -110 I will be SLAMMING Conners. You can find Conners -110 at bet365.
