Golf Picks: May 24 - The Charles Schwab Challenge

By Marc Tersigni

Does anyone else feel sorry for Mito Pereira? What a brutal way to lose the PGA Championship; all we can do is chalk that one up to nerves. For all of you that jumped on my Rory pick, well I’m sorry. We were right there after rounds one and two, but he once again failed to get the job done. Close is just not good enough for a golfer with that much talent. What a brutal third round he put together.

The PGA Championship was entertaining, and hopefully the Charles Schwab Challenge can deliver as well. The field this week is also pretty good. Newly crowned PGA Champ Justin Thomas will tee it up, as well as other notable golfers such as Morikawa, Spieth, Scheffler, Hovland and Zalatoris. Jason Kokrak is also in the field as he tries to defend his title.

The Favourites

The top 3 favourites this week include:

  1. Scottie Scheffler - Best price: +1200 at BetMGM
  2. Justin Thomas - Best price: +1200 at bet365
  3. Jordan Spieth - Best price: +1200 at BetMGM

Longshots at great value

Maverick McNealy - +7000 - He managed to make the cut last week, but he wasn’t able to put his full game together. Still worth a shot… This week we can find him at +70000 at bet365

Billy Horschel - +5000 - Billy has somewhat fallen off the radar in the last month or so. I wouldn't be surprised if he was able to string together a few good weeks. His best price +5000 and can be found at BetMGM.

My Outright winner:

This doesn’t happen too often, but I really like Justin Thomas to repeat this week. But at 12-to-1, I am not really excited about it. He has everything going for him, but the odds are just too low. So instead I will be going with a great golfer that hasn’t had his best season thus far; Tommy Fleetwood. He put together a really nice weekend at the PGA Championship, and I’m hoping he can build on it. Tommy has never played in the Charles Schwab Challenge, and I am suspecting that’s why we are able to get such good value on him this week.

My pick - Tommy Fleetwood +4500 at bet365.

Tournament Match-ups

As I said earlier, I love Justin Thomas this week. So for my tournament match-up I will take Thomas over Scheffler (-110) at bet365. Scheffler had a horrible PGA Championship, especially by his standards. The man has won four times this year, but I’m willing to fade him and take Thomas in this match-up.

My pick - Thomas over Scheffler (-110) at bet365
