MLB Picks: August 03

By Michael Spiegel

With the trade deadline behind us, and some blockbuster moves that went down the day of; teams are now heading into the final third of the MLB season. Today, new faces will become acclimated to their new homes as they try to help their team make that final push to get into the postseason and be as competitive as possible in the hopes of winning a championship.

This afternoon, the Seattle Mariners will get their first look at newly acquired Luis Castillo. Castillo was recently acquired by the Mariners from the Cincinnati Reds for quite a considerable price. Going the Reds way were four of Seattle’s prospects, including their first, third, and fifth-ranked prospects in their system. We will just have to wait and see if the Mariners made the right choice by selling off huge assets of their farm system in order to acquire the highly touted Castillo (who was rumoured to be linked to the Yankees earlier this week). Castillo pitched against the Yankees a few weeks ago and went seven strong innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run in the process. This season, Castillo sports an ERA of 2.86 and a WHIP of 1.07. He was widely considered to be one of the best starting pitchers available leading up to the deadline and we shall see if the Mariners got their money’s worth today. He’s gone 7 innings in each of his last 4 starts and will be looking to continue that streak today.

Going up against Castillo is another formidable force in the likes of Gerrit Cole. The Yankees ace has been dominant on the mound this year; however, he has struggled over his last two outings. While facing the Orioles and Royals, Cole gave up a combined 16 hits and 8 earned runs through just 12 innings of work. Facing a much stronger lineup in the Mariners, it will be interesting to see how he does. Given the recent track record, I’m giving the pitching edge to Castillo today.

The Mariners and Yankees have split the first two games of this series, so its winner take all this afternoon. I’ve got my money on Castillo to shine brightly in his first contest with his new club and lead them to victory. At +165, there’s some good money to be made in what should be a fantastic pitching matchup.

Pick: Mariners @ Yankees: Mariners (+165) bet365

Other notable bets:

Orioles @ Rangers: Rangers -1.5 (+143) NorthStar Bets: Martín Pérez, who has been a bright spot in the Rangers organization this year, takes the mound today. A possible Cy Young candidate, he should have no problem shutting down the Orioles lacklustre offense. On the other side, Kyle Bradish is sporting an ERA over 7 on the season. I think the Rangers should easily cover the spread.

Reds @ Marlins: Marlins -1.5 (+114) at NorthStar Bets: Sandy Alcantara, one of the best pitchers in baseball at the moment, always gives the Marlins a chance to win. Going up against the struggling Reds, he should be able to limit their offensive output. For the Reds, Mike Minor takes the mound with an ERA over 6. The Marlins should be able to put up a fair number of runs against him and cover the spread without any issues.

Dodgers @ Giants: Dodgers -1.5 (+112) at Sports Interaction: Julio Urías goes up against Alex Cobb in this California matchup. Urías is quietly putting up one heck of a season, with an ERA under 3 and a WHIP under 1. Cobb on the other hand has an ERA over 4 and a WHIP close to 1.30. I think the Dodgers should be able to cover the spread today and extend their NL West lead.
