MLB Picks: August 03

By Rally Kapz

Ok, so your favourite team didn’t get Juan Soto.  How do you move on?  Let’s face it, most teams weren’t in the running anyway.  The rumour mill had the Padres, Dodgers and Cardinals as the serious players to land Soto, with the Padres, of course, securing the prize yesterday.  It’s impossible to feel bad for Dodgers fans, since they already have so many weapons but I do feel somewhat bad for the Cardinal faithful.  It’s hard to be the bridesmaid.  That said, the Cards did acquire Jordan Montgomery and Jose Quintana, so their rotation is no doubt stronger as they make a push to secure a postseason bid.  Tonight, the red birds start Miles Mikolas against the Chicago Cubs.  Mikolas has been a steady performer, and comes into this one with a 2.86 ERA, and 0.99 WHIP.  He’s allowed less than two earned runs in two of his last three outings.  The Cubs lineup doesn’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers these days, so I like the Cardinals’ chances this evening.  Afterall, they may not have landed Soto, but Arenado and Goldschmidt are nothing to sneeze at.  Moneyline is the play here.

Pick:  St. Louis Cardinals ML (-165) BetMGM vs. Chicago Cubs

The Miami Marlins are out of contention for this year, so they unloaded a couple of bullpen arms yesterday, sending Anthony Bass and Zach Pop to the Toronto Blue Jays, for minor league shortstop Jordan Groshans.  Certainly not a headline grabbing move but a good baseball trade for both teams.  Losing a couple of key relief arms won’t help the Marlins win more this year but tonight they hopefully won’t need too much help out of the bullpen, as ace Sandy Alcantara takes the mound.  The six-foot-five Dominican has been dominant this season, posting a 1.99 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, to go along with 138 strikeouts.  All he needs is a little run support.  Did you hear that, Marlins batters?  Hit the ball…and do it tonight.  I think they will and Alcantara will do the rest.  I like the Marlins on the runline.

Pick:  Miami Marlins -1.5 (+114) BetRivers vs. Cincinnati Reds
