MLB Picks: August 04
Tonight, the Blue Jays are in Minnesota to start a 4-game series with the Twins. The pitching matchup tonight features two former first-round picks: Alek Manoah for the Blue Jays, and Sonny Gray for the Twins. It should be an exciting matchup, as it tends to be whenever Alek Manoah is on the mound.
Manoah currently holds an ERA under 2.5 and a WHIP under 1 on the season. While he did struggle a bit in July (in comparison to his other months this season), he’ll be looking to turn that around with a fresh start here in August to help drive his team into the postseason. Manoah has just one career appearance against the Twins, which came last season when he pitched 5.2 solid innings and picked up the win. Manoah is currently tied for second in the MLB with 16 quality starts this season.
As for Sonny Gray, most of this Blue Jays lineup has never faced him. Gray hasn’t pitched against the Blue Jays since 2018 when he was with the Yankees. Gray has pitched fairly well this season for the Twins, posting a 6-3 record with a 3.41 ERA and a WHIP of 1.11. However, over his last 5 starts, Gray’s numbers have fallen drastically. His ERA over those starts is close to 6 and against AL East teams this season his ERA is close to 7. It will be a new challenge for both Gray and for the Blue Jays hitters who are facing each other for the first time. It should be exciting to see how the young bats fair against the veteran arm.
The Blue Jays are currently favoured to win tonight’s matchup at -120 via Bet99. The ‘new look’ Blue Jays are now 12-4 under their new manager John Schneider. While the Jays didn’t make any huge splashes at the deadline, Schneider will have his new tools available to him tonight as the newly acquired players meet their new teammates in Minnesota. I think tonight’s matchup will be a tight contest, however, I do think that the Blue Jays will come out on top. At -120, I feel those are fairly good odds given Manoah’s ability to dominate during his starts. Whenever Manoah is on the mound, I think anything better than -150 is a good price.
Other notable bets:
Rockies @ Padres: Padres -1.5 -122 (FanDuel): The Padres undoubtedly made the biggest splash at the trade deadline when they acquired Josh Bell and Juan Soto. After obliterating the Rockies last night, 9-1, I think a similar performance is in store this afternoon with Joe Musgrove on the mound for them.
Astros @ Guardians: Astros -180 (Caesars): With Justin Verlander on the mound against a struggling Guardians team, I would think the Astros should be at least -200 favourites. I feel like this bet has some great value and is as close to a lock as any.
White Sox @ Rangers: Rangers +112 (NorthStar): Former first-round pick, Cole Ragans, will make his MLB debut tonight for the Rangers. The left-handed throwing pitcher will be looking to get his career started on the right foot and taking a chance bet on a guy pitching in his first game is always fun.
