MLB Picks: August 05

By Adam Ortega

A big matchup is upon us Friday evening at Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers are squarely in first place in the NL West division. However, at the trade deadline, the most significant moves of any MLB team came from the Padres. Two of those moves came from arguably the best player in baseball Juan Soto, and one of the best closing pitchers, Josh Hader. The Padres have put the rest of the MLB on notice by making these statement trades and letting everyone know they are in it to win the World Series.

On the mound for the Padres in this tilt will be left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea (6-5, 4.25 ERA, 1.27 WHIP). Manaea relies on the sinker, changeup, slider, and curveball to keep batters off balance. Although he's been battling an inconsistent season, look for the new additions to the Padres clubhouse to provide him enough support to have a solid finish to the season.

For the Dodgers, under the bright lights will be one Tony Gonsolin (12-1, 2.41 ERA, 0.90 WHIP). Gonsolin could not have asked for a better start to his season. When the Dodgers have him on the mound, you can expect to see the fastball, slider, curveball, and splitter. Although Gonsolin has had a stellar season, look for the momentum of having Juan Soto in the lineup for the Padres to bring some regression for Gonsolin.

Now representing the San Diego Padres is right fielder Juan Soto. That statement alone has a nice ring to it. With that comes a lot of buzz in the San Diego area, and I think Soto is just the player to back up the hype. On the season, Soto brings 21 home runs, 46 RBI's, and a batting average of .245. Look for Soto and company to ignite the Padre fans and play spoiler at Dodger Stadium as the underdog.

One of my favorite players for the Dodgers that hits in the middle of the lineup is catcher Will Smith. Never a flashy player, Smith goes about his work quietly and confidently. Coming in with 15 home runs, 55 RBI's, and a batting average of .263, Smith is exactly what the Dodgers need in this position to bring them continued success.

Although the Dodgers have a pitching advantage Friday night, I think the bats of the Padres will be the big story after the dust has settled. Look to take the Padres as a live underdog Friday night! Have a great weekend!
