MLB Picks: Aug 12
By Adam Ortega
Yankees (-120 ML) vs. Red Sox:
The Evil Empire is back in Boston to take on the Red Sox in the first of a three-game weekend series. The Red Sox are a team fighting to get out of the cellar in the AL East. The Yankees are attempting to shake out the cobwebs and string together a sweep of their rival this weekend. As the pressure mounts on the Yankees organization, things won't get easier in front of a raucous Fenway Ballpark crowd.
Domingo German will be on the mound for the Yankees (1-2, 5.09 ERA, 1.53 WHIP). Being able to withstand the moment's pressure will be essential for his success Friday night. The pitches that need to work for German are the fastball and the curveball. Statistically, the Red Sox are twelfth in overall MLB offensive statistics. Given those facts, this should provide a good opportunity for German to get into a rhythm and provide the Yankees with quality innings.
The Red Sox are trying to hold onto any positivity to guide them out of last place in the division. The man looking to make good things happen for the Red Sox is Nathan Eovaldi (5-3, 4.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP). Eovaldi will have his hands full as the Yankees are statistically the number two offensive team in MLB. Eovaldi will be relying heavily on his fastball. However, if the Yankees see the ball well, look for the baseball to be leaving the yard.
Rafael Devers is the man for the Red Sox who makes this team go. Devers comes into Friday's game with 24 home runs, 60 RBIs, and a batting average of .310. For the Red Sox to have any shot at winning this game or even this series, his bat must be hot. Hitting can be contagious. Hopefully, Devers can pass this along to his teammates as well.
Offensively for the Yankees, there isn't any specific player that I will highlight. The Yankees are a team that is just swinging for the fences. Thus, it's affected their ability to put runs on the board as of late. It's time to get back to getting runners on base. Finally, when the Yankees have runners on base, they need to stop making ridiculous base-running mistakes.
If the Yankees can clean things up, look for them to win Friday night. Take the Yankees ML.
