MLB Picks: August 13

By Rally Kapz

It’s mid-August and the baseball postseason races are starting to heat up!  The battle for an American League wildcard spot is going to be an absolute dogfight.  Right now, as of this morning, there are seven teams in contention for the three wildcard berths and they are separated by just six games.  I think the expanded playoffs is a big win for MLB and will keep many for fanbases engaged as we head into the stretch drive of the season.

Two of the teams in the battle for playoff spots will continue their series today, as the Toronto Blue Jays host the Cleveland Guardians at Rogers Centre this afternoon.  The Guardians are on a nice winning streak at the moment, having won six in a row, and have taken overtaken the Minnesota Twins for the lead in the AL Central.  The Guardians can be a fun team to watch because they put the ball in play.  Their batters have the fewest strikeouts in MLB, and by a wide margin.  Aside from Jose Ramirez (22 hrs) and Josh Naylor (15 hrs), they don’t hit for a lot of power but they rank among the league’s best in doubles and triples.  They’ll also steal some bases on you, so opposing teams cannot be caught napping.  Overall, just a sneaky good team.

Then you have the Toronto Blue Jays.  The Jays began the season with a formidable rotation, including Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Alek Manoah, Hyun Jin Ryu, and a freshly signed Yusei Kikuchi.  Aside from Gausman and Manoah, the results from this group has been underwhelming to say the least, and with injuries to Ross Stripling and Tim Mayza, the Jays’ pitching is incredibly thin at the moment.  Berrios was roughed up last night in the series opener, as the Guardians took the series opener 8-0.  Even without an injured George Springer, the Blue Jays have a great deal of firepower in their lineup.  It’s rare to see them shutout like last night, and I expect we’ll see much better production today from the likes of Bichette, Hernandez, Gurriel and Vladdy.

Today’s pitching matchup has Tristan McKenzie for the Guardians vs. Mitch White for the Blue Jays.  As mentioned, Cleveland puts the ball in play and the Jays are due for an offensive breakout.  I like the Over here.

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Cleveland Guardians over 8 runs (-115) at Betway
