MLB Picks: July 04

By Rally Kapz

While the Yankees continue to grab most of the headlines in the American League, perhaps the scariest team out there right now is the Houston Astros. This team can beat you with both offense and defense. They rank top 5 in both team HRs and team OPS across MLB, and when they’re not mashing, they’re shutting down the bats of opposing teams. Houston’s pitching has been top notch so far this year, ranking first in team ERA (2.89) and ranking second in both WHIP and opposing team batting average. That’s why they’re the defending AL champs and on track for more postseason success.

The Astros come into this game on a six-game winning streak and face the AL Central bottom-dwellers – the Kansas City Royals. Jake Odorizzi starts for the Astros. He has been solid in his first seven starts of the season, posting an ERA of 3.13 and WHIP of 1.17. While his strikeouts have been somewhat lower compared to his career average, he has been successful at keeping the ball in the park, giving up just 0.28 HRs per nine innings. Today, that should be enough to roll past a Royals club that has given up the most runs in the American League.

Pick:  Houston Astros -1.5 (-105) at Bet99

We’re fast approaching the mid-point of the season. Injuries combined with make-up games has led to a bunch of doubleheaders being played. This is great for fans but not so great for a heavily-taxed pitching staff. The result of course is call-ups from the minors, giving teams a chance to look at some up and comers.  Today in Detroit, Garrett Hill makes his first career major league start for the Tigers. While his minor league stats make him worthy of a start in the Show, I tend to fade these rookies until I see that they can handle the moment. I’ll take the Cleveland Guardians today.

Pick:  Cleveland Guardians -1.5 (+125) at Proline+

Next, off to Oakland we go. The depth of the Jays’ pitching staff was again called into question over the weekend, as they dropped the last three games of a rare five-game set vs. Tampa. To the rescue today comes Alek Manoah. He has been consistently good if not great all season long and should give the Jays an opportunity to get an early lead. I like the Jays to be leading after 5 innings in this one.

Pick:  Toronto Blue Jays -1 First 5 (-105) at Bet99
