MLB Picks: July 05

By Adam Ortega

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers

This is a great game to start off the week after the 4th of July celebrations that happened all across the United States. The Brewers are coming off a big win on Monday, and look to extend their winning to Tuesday.

Hendricks is pitching for the Cubs. He’s been inconsistent, and I never feel comfortable backing the Cubs while he is on the mound. The Brewers are a team that has the ability to do some damage with their bats in this matchup.

On the other side, pitching for the Brewers, is Alexander who has his ERA sitting at 3.82. Having a decent arm on the mound, in addition to a better bullpen leads us to back the Milwaukee Brewers on this spot. Presently, the Brewers overall bullpen ERA is 3.50. In comparison, the Cubs bullpen is at an ERA of 4.45. If the Brewers aren't able to get to Hendricks during his time on the mound, you can expect Milwaukee's bats to come alive when the Cubs make a call to the ‘pen.

As for the Cubs, look for Seiya Suzuki to possibly continue to hit well after good production on the 4th of July. Another bat that can potentially produce for the Cubbies is Wilson Contreras, who has at atleast 13 home runs this season along with 35 RBI's.

The Brewers offense would like to see a few more home runs off the bat of left fielder Christian Yelich who has 8 dingers this year. In addition, Yelich has also put up 31 RBI's to provide additional support. Shortstop Willy Adames is another key piece to a Brewers team who needs to start improving his batting average if the Brewers want to maintain their lead in the National League Central. Adames presently has 16 home runs to go along with 45 RBI's. Although Adames is a long ball threat, more discipline while he's at the plate might help his team make a run in October.

Although there are lots of twists and turns to any season, the Brewers are in a tight race with the St. Louis Cardinals. This is a spot that the Brewers need to take advantage of to either extend or maintain their lead in the National League Central, so the urgency should be there.
