MLB Picks: July 10

Written by Michael Spiegel

The Giants and Padres face off this afternoon to finish off a four-game set. After the Padres took the first two games of this series, the Giants took yesterday’s ballgame as Carlos Rodon threw a complete game. Today’s matchup focuses on two left-handed pitchers; the well-experienced Alex Wood for the Giants, and rookie sensation MacKenzie Gore takes the mound for the Padres.

This pitching matchup took place earlier this season on May 22nd. The Padres defeated the Giants 10-1, Wood pitched 3 innings and gave up 5 earned runs. On the other side, Gore pitched 6 strong innings, giving up 1 run and picking up the win. Alex Wood has pitched against the Padres twice this season and has struggled mightily. Over those two starts, he pitched 7.1 innings overall giving up 13 hits and 7 earned runs. Over those two starts, the Padres have an OPS of .965, showing that they like hitting when he’s on the mound. On the season, Wood has an ERA nearing 5 and a WHIP of 1.33. Wood picked up the no-decision in his last start against the Diamondbacks, pitching five innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. He hasn’t been looking too sharp as of late and I think that trend is going to continue.

For the Padres, MacKenzie Gore continues to show why he was picked third overall back in 2017. After looking unhittable early on in the season, Gore had a pretty rough month of June, carrying an ERA over 7 for the month. The driving force behind that elevated ERA, and what has pushed his ERA over 3 on the season now, is back-to-back brutal outings against the Colorado Rockies. If we exclude those outliers, Gore is still as dominant as ever and he showed that last week when he had a very solid outing against the Dodgers. With back-to-back quality starts, Gore seems to have shaken off whatever rust he had when he was facing the Rockies. Gore has only faced the Giants once in his career and he had an excellent outing, I’m looking for more of the same of that today.

I’m taking the Padres to cover the spread this afternoon against the Giants. Given the last time that these two pitchers faced off against one another resulted in a blowout win for the Padres, the domination that Padres hitters seem to have against Alex Wood, and MacKenzie Gore being on the mound for the Padres, this seems to be shaping out for a big win for the San Diego.

Pick: Giants @ Padres: Padres -1.5 +170 (Bet99)

Other notable bets:

Angels @ Orioles: Orioles ML -105 (PointsBet): Riding a seven-game win streak, I’m going to go with the hot hand in this one. Let’s see if the Orioles can make it eight.

Marlins @ Mets: Marlins ML +110 (PowerPlay): Even with Taijuan Walker on the mound for the Mets, I can’t bet against Sandy Alcantara. The Marlins ace has been unbelievable this season, and I expect his domination to continue. He went 8 strong innings in his last outing, only giving up 2 hits, and over his last 7 starts, he is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA.

Phillies @ Cardinals: Phillies -1.5 +155 (Bet99): The Cardinals are 2-8 over their last 10 and have Andre Pallante starting for them today, who gave up 10 hits over 3.2 innings in his last start. The Phillies have won 3 straight and I think they’ll make it 4 today.
