MLB Picks: July 13

By Michael Spiegel

The Red Sox are in St. Petersburg tonight for game 3 of their 4-game set with the Rays. The Rays took the first two games of this series and will be looking to secure the series win tonight. The pitching matchup heavily favours the Rays tonight, with Shane McClanahan on the mound. The Rays are always in a great position to win when the Cy Young candidate, McClanahan, is pitching for them. Tampa have played very well at home this year, with one of the best home records in the American League.

A little more about McClanahan, he currently leads the American League in ERA, WHIP, OPP AVG, and is second in Ks. To say McClanahan is having a good year would be a vast understatement. He’s backed up these stats as of recent too, going at least 6 innings in each start since May 11th and going 2-0 with 1 no decision over his last 3 starts. Over his career, McClanahan is 2-1 against the Red Sox and beat them earlier this season going 7 strong. Suffice to say that the Rays have an excellent chance of winning with this guy on the mound, and I can’t see that being any different tonight.

On the hill for the Red Sox is another young pitcher in Josh Winckowski. This season he has put up an ERA over 4 and a WHIP above 1.50. He has lost back-to-back starts, including walking 5 and giving up 6 runs in his most recent outing. The Rays have the pitching advantage in this one, although with their offense being ranked in the bottom half of the league, it should still be a low-scoring affair. Even with a struggling pitcher on the mound, the Red Sox offense has been dominant these past few weeks, catapulting them to first place in hits and AVG. Even with the fantastic offensive numbers that they have, I think McClanahan has the edge and will shut those hot hitters down.

It'll be a low-scoring affair in this one, maybe consider parlaying the under in with whoever you think will take this game. I think the Rays will come out on top, and with the dominance that McClanahan has shown, I think they’ll cover the spread.

Pick: Red Sox @ Rays: Rays -1.5 +135 (Caesars)

Other notable bets:

Reds @ Yankees: Reds ML +270 (theScore Bet): The Reds scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th last night to overcome a 3-run deficit and beat the Yankees. There’s a lot of money to be made with the Reds at this heavy of an underdog and anything can happen, like scoring 4 runs in the top of the 9th against the best team in baseball.

Dodgers @ Cardinals: Dodgers -1.5 +117 (Sports Interaction): Tony Gonsolin, the best pitcher at the moment, takes the mound for the Dodgers tonight. He’s 11-0 this year and seems unhittable as of late. With him on the mound, I’m taking the Dodgers to cover the spread every time.

Astros @ Angels: Astros ML +120 (PowerPlay): Even with Shohei Ohtani on the mound for the Angels, the struggles that they have faced as of late are too big to ignore. I’m surprised to see the Astros as the underdog in this one, and I like the value that this bet offers, considering I think they should be priced closer to -110.
