MLB Picks: July 13

By Adam Ortega

Out in California, we go for the nightcap on a Wednesday with two teams in the American League West division heading in very different directions in the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels.

The Houston Astros come into this game as the division leader. Many have the Astros coming in at number two in power rankings when comparing all teams in baseball. Scheduled to pitch for the Astros is Christian Javier, who will be coming into this game with a record of 6-4. This 25-year-old has an ERA of 3.01 and a WHIP of 0.99. Javier throws the fastball, slider, curveball, and changeup. Although he did take a loss against the Kansas City Royals in his last outing, look for him to be electric on the mound Wednesday night.

For the Angels, the multi-talented Shohei Ohtani comes into this game looking to shut down the Astros. Presently, his ERA sits at 2.44 with WHIP of 0.99. Coming into Wednesday night's game, his record stands at 8-4. Aside from his pitching, he's also producing great offense with a batting average of .256. Ohtani has hit 19 home runs and 54 RBI's to date.

While Ohtani brings his talents to this game, he will be facing a formidable lineup of excellent hitters in the Astros. The gauntlet of hitters that the Astros present start with Jose Altuve. This season he's batting at an average of .279, with 17 home runs and 32 RBI's. Additionally, he also adds a sure glove defensively at second base.

After assessing the different elements this matchup presents, we have to look at the offense of the Astros and rely on them to come through for us in this spot. Ohtani presents challenges while pitching, but we have to ultimately believe that someone in the Astros lineup will get to him. Take the Astros as a rare dog in this spot at plus money.
