MLB Picks: July 16

By Adam Ortega

*Postponed from July 15*

There's nothing better than day baseball at Wrigley Field. That will be the setting for this matchup between the Mets and the Cubs. The Mets will be handing the ball to Taijuan Walker. For the Cubs, they will be sending out Marcus Stroman to the mound.

For the Mets and Walker, he brings into this matchup a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 2.63. His WHIP stands at 1.10. Presently, Walker has six pitches that he uses to keep hitters off balance. He uses the fastball, split-finger fastball, slider, sinker, curveball, and cutter. The two pitches that Stroman does use the most to overpower batters are the fastball and the split-finger fastball.

On the bump for the Cubs will be Marcus Stroman. On the year, he has struggled and brings in a record of 2-5 and an ERA of 4.91. Stroman also possesses a variety of pitches that include the sinker, slider, fastball, cutter, and split-finger fastball. Once he gets comfortable on the mound, his go-to pitch is the sinker.

For the Mets, when it comes to producing runs, it starts with their big bat in Pete Alonso. He currently has 23 home runs, and 72 RBI's on the season. At the plate, he is hitting an average of .268. Don't be surprised if Alonso finds a pitch he loves and hits one out of the park. Aside from having Pete Alonso, the Mets have much more firepower at the plate with players like Mark Canha and Francisco Lindor.

Getting runs on the board is more difficult for the Cubs than for the Mets. However, when they produce, you could assume that Wilson Contreras is in the mix. He has hit 13 long balls along with 35 RBI's. Contreras's batting average stands at .262.

One of the better teams in baseball that no one is talking about is the New York Mets. They've quietly been sitting in first place with a 55-34 record thus far. Additionally, the Mets are trying to maintain their slim lead over the Braves in the National League East. For the Cubs, their fans will be faithful and pack Wrigley Field, but it will be hard to compete Friday afternoon against the Mets. Take the Mets to get a comfortable win.

PICK: Mets -130 (Draftkings Sportsbook)
