MLB Picks: July 16

By Mitchell Blair

I love baseball, but it can be damn frustrating when you are placing bets on what you hope happens.  What’s great about the game is that any team can win on any night as the Reds proved at Yankee Stadium this week taking two of three from the mighty Yankees. Raise your hand if you were like me thinking the Blue Jays and Kevin Gausman would have no problem with a severely watered down Kansas City thus denying you a chance to make some money on Thursday. Today is another day so let’s see what is out there.

How can you not bet on the Seattle Mariners these days?  They have won 12 straight and are 15-1 in their last 16. They are red hot as they continue a series in Texas. Going into Friday’s game, Seattle pitchers lead the Majors with a 2.82 ERA over their last 45 games since May 27. The Mariners’ pitchers are 30-15 with a 2.82 ERA with 114 walks and 365 strikeouts in that span. The streak will come to an end, but I don’t think it will happen today. Take Seattle on the moneyline.

PICK: Seattle at -145 on Bet99

The NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers are in San Francisco. Milwaukee had to bounce back after an implosion in the 9th as San Francisco got 6 to turn a defeat into a victory. Games like that gotta hurt. Eric Lauer has been a disaster of late for Milwaukee. Today’s starter have given up 10 homers in his last 6 outings. San Francisco has turned things around after losing 14 of 18 as they are battling several other teams for a wildcard spot. After a tough start to the season, Alex Cobb has been much better. His ERA may be sitting at over 4.5, but dig deeper and you will see he has given up three or fewer runs in his last five outings. I like the Giants on the moneyline, but I like the over 8.0 a little better.

PICK: Milwaukee/SF over 8 at +100 on bet365

Let’s finish things off with an NL West showdown between San Diego and Arizona. The Padres have won 7 of 9 from their division rival this year and I see no reason why they shouldn’t make it 8 of 10. Arizona averages under 3 runs per game against the Padres this year. Let’s go with Machado and company to lay a beating on a Diamondbacks team that has its difficulty scoring against the Pods.

PICK: San Diego (-1.5) at +115 at Bet99
