MLB Picks: July 24

By Michael Spiegel

The Blue Jays are finishing up their series in Boston against the Red Sox this afternoon. After tallying a new franchise high in runs on Friday night, the Jays followed that up with a win yesterday to clinch the series victory. Today, the Jays will be looking to pull out the brooms and complete the sweep against a division rival.

Ross Stripling gets the start for the Blue Jays today. After Hyun-Jin Ryu underwent Tommy John surgery last month, Stripling took his spot in the rotation and has done a fantastic job in filling his shoes. He had an exceptional outing before the all-star break, going 7 strong innings against the Phillies and picking up the win in the process. So far this season Stripling has an ERA just over 3 and a WHIP just over 1 with a 5-3 record. Stripling looks to be finding his former self this season, the 2018 All-Star has been pitching very well and has been pitching his best since he joined the Blue Jays in 2020. Stripling faced the Red Sox less than a month ago and pitched 5 innings and gave up 2 runs. This season, Stripling has pitched 10 total innings against the Red Sox and has given up 3 runs. His recent success should continue this afternoon and I expect him to have another strong outing.

For the Red Sox, the rookie Brayan Bello gets the start this afternoon. The 23-year-old right-hander has only pitched 8 innings this season and to say that he has struggled so far is an understatement. Over his two starts, Bello has an ERA over 10 and a WHIP of 2.38. The Blue Jays' offense should be able to take advantage of the struggling young pitcher today and pick up their sixth straight win. The Red Sox on the other hand are 2-8 over their last ten games and have lost their last 4 games by a combined score of 59-9.

With Stripling on the mound for the Jays, the Blue Jays bats picking up, and a struggling pitcher on the hill for the Red Sox, this is a recipe for the Jays to pull out their brooms and complete the sweep at Fenway Park. I’m taking them to cover the spread this afternoon in what should be a blowout.

Pick: Blue Jays @ Red Sox: Blue Jays -1.5 +106 (Sports Interaction)

Other notable bets:

Marlins @ Pirates: Marlins ML -170 (bet365):

Sandy Alcantara is on the mound for the Marlins today, and anytime that he’s pitching, you should be betting on them to win. Going up against the struggling Pirates, the Marlins should be favored closer to -200.

Giants @ Dodgers: Dodgers -1.5 +102 (BetRivers):

The Dodgers have won seven straight games and Clayton Kershaw is on the mound for them today. I think the Dodgers will complete the series sweep against the Giants and cover the spread while they’re at it.

Astros @ Mariners: Astros ML -114 (BetRivers):

Houston is riding a 4-game win streak and are looking to get the series sweep against the Mariners today. It’s going to be a fun pitching matchup with Framber Valdez going up against Robbie Ray, but I think the Astros still take this one and finish up the series sweep.

Padres @ Mets: Padres ML +102 (BetRivers):

Another team going for a sweep this weekend are the Padres. Joe Musgrove gets the start for the Padres tonight and with how well he has been pitching this
year, I’m surprised to see the Padres not favoured for this game. I’m taking the Musgrove and the Padres to finish their sweep against the Mets.
