MLB Picks: July 27
So, how’s your favourite team doing? Are they contenders for the World Series? Are they in the hunt for a wildcard? Or, have you already moved on to thinking about next year? With the MLB trade deadline (Aug 2) approaching, it’s crunch time for GMs to bolster their team’s chances and fill in roster holes as best as they can. In that spirit, today’s picks will feature a couple of teams that may have some players on the move by this time next week.
First up, what has happened to the Boston Red Sox? This team has been so streaky, both hot and cold, that it must have the Fenway faithful pulling their hair out. Having lost eight of their last ten games, this most recent bout of poor play has the Red Sox sitting in the basement of the AL East as of this morning and may well have turned them from buyers into sellers at the trade deadline. One player that may be on the move is Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi has struggled at times this season, including his most recent outing against the Blue Jays, where he gave up nine earned runs in just 2.2 innings. As a depth starter, he would be attractive to a lot of contending teams. He gets the start today for Boston, and as this may be his last chance to showcase himself prior to the deadline, I think he bounces back and gives the Bosox enough for them to get a win this evening against Cal Quantrill and the Cleveland Guardians.
Next up are the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds had the worst start to an MLB season in over thirty years, losing 22 of their first 25 games. Safe to say they’ve been in teardown mode since the season began. One of the few bright spots for the Reds and probably their most sought-after asset at the trade deadline, is starting pitcher Luis Castillo. The Reds will most definitely be sellers and Castillo should bring them a great return. Castillo has posted an ERA of 2.77 and WHIP of 1.08, impressive numbers given what a dreadful team the Reds have been. He takes the mound today as the Reds host Braxton Garrett and the Miami Marlins tonight. Different team jerseys are being photoshopped onto Castillo as we speak and I think he showcases himself well today. I’ll be taking the Reds on the moneyline.
