Mets vs Marlins: July 29

By Adam Ortega

If the Mets want to continue their march towards winning the pennant, they will need to continue with their hot hitting and pitching. After sweeping the Yankees in the Subway Series, the Mets travel to Miami to take on the Marlins.

In their way is a Miami Marlins team trying to get to the .500 mark. The Marlins will have a pitching advantage on the mound when they send the young phenom Sandy Alcantara. The Mets will trot out Chris Bassitt.

The Marlins have, in my opinion, the best young pitcher in baseball today, Sandy Alcantara. Although his record is deceiving at 9-4 due to lack of run support, don't let that fool you. His ERA stands at 1.81, with a WHIP of 0.90. If the Marlins can put some runs on the board, look for him, Alcantara, to have a great outing. His stock continues to rise, and it's no secret that he is elite.

For the Mets, Chris Bassitt will be toeing the rubber. Friday night's game is one in which Bassitt will be looking to get above the .500 mark in the win/loss column. He's coming in with a 7-7 record, an ERA of 3.72, and a WHIP of 1.10. While the Mets currently sit fifth in the MLB for runs scored per game. Bassitt needs more length and support while he's on the mound.

Batting second in the order, Jesus Aguilar is a player who is one of the lone bright spots for the Marlins bats. To date, he's produced 12 home runs, 43 RBI's, and a batting average of .251. The Marlins desperately need Aguilar to send baseballs deep into the stands Friday night for them to have a chance to give Alcantara and the Marlins a big win. Having runners on base while Aguilar is batting is one way to do some damage.

The bats of the Mets showed up in a big way for them against the Yankees. Pete Alonso is the man who did significant damage to the Yankees and many other teams. The question remains, will the Mets be able to stay motivated to play against a team that many consider subpar? One thing is for sure, expect Alonso to continue to swing for the fences. To date, Alonso, one of MLB's league leaders, has 26 home runs and 84 RBI's.

On paper, I can understand why someone would lean towards the Mets. This game might go under the radar for many. Instead of automatically leaning towards the Mets, let's give this a second look. With Alcantara on the mound, he has proven time and time again that he can shut down even the best teams. With better run support from the Marlins, the Met's riding in on a high, and Alcantara on the mound, take the Marlins at plus money.
