MLB Picks: June 07

By Michael Spiegel

The Oakland Athletics are in Atlanta tonight to kick off their two-game stint with the Braves. Oakland has not been able to do much this season and have dropped their last six. The Braves are starting to turn their season around, having won their last five games, and are now sitting above .500.

The left-hander Cole Irvin takes the start for the A’s and has produced some fairly solid numbers this year, perhaps a shining light in an otherwise gloomy Oakland clubhouse. Irvin has given up just 6 runs over his last 3 starts and carries a sub-3 ERA into tonight’s contest. However, Irvin has pitched against the Braves five times over the course of his career and has been absolutely lit up. Over those five games, he’s given up 19 hits, 13 runs, and an opponent’s OPS of over 1.110. While the batters that he faced were different during those games, they haven’t changed significantly, especially the star players. The Braves have shown to have success against Irvin in the past, and I don’t see tonight being any different.

Kyle Wright will pitch for the Braves tonight and he has been a reason for his squad’s recent success. He went 6 innings in his last outing, giving up 3 hits in the process, and has an ERA under 2.50 this year. His WHIP has also been impressive, sitting at 1.07. Wright has never pitched against the Athletics so this will be a new challenge for him in his young career.

While the A’s offence isn’t much to talk about, sitting dead last in almost every hitting metric, the Braves are starting to heat up. The Braves sit ninth in baseball in OPS, and when they are facing lefties, they are fourth. Speaking of crushing against lefties, Austin Riley (who has rather pedestrian numbers when facing right-handers) has been outstanding against left-handers this year. While only batting .235 against righties, he’s currently batting .339 against lefties and has an OPS over 1.150, fifth best in the National League. If the Braves are going to have success tonight, he’ll be a huge factor.

Oakland is 6-18 against teams over .500 this year, and with their inability to produce runs this season, I can’t see this one being close. I have the Braves covering the spread in what should be a blowout.

Pick: Braves -1.5 -110 (Bet99)

Other notable bets:

Austin Riley Over 0.5 Home Runs +320 (BetRivers): His success against lefties has been incredible. I think he’ll hit a long ball tonight, adding to the two homers that he’s hit in June already.

Blue Jays @ Royals: Blue Jays -1.5 -125 (PowerPlay): Bad idea to bet against Alek Manoah who has put his name forward as a potential Cy Young candidate. Posting a sub 2 ERA and WHIP under 1, he has been lights out this year. Going up against a struggling Brad Keller, and with the Jays bats heating up, this should be another blowout game, similar to last night’s contest.

Alek Manoah Over 5.5 Strikeouts -105 (BetMGM): While getting 5 strikeouts in his last outing, Manoah put up 9 in his start before that. Looking for him to be dealing tonight, putting up closer to double digit K’s.
