MLB Picks: June 11

By Michael Spiegel

Two hard throwing lefties take the mound today as the Brewers visit the Nationals. Both teams have been struggling quite a bit as of late, Milwaukee on a 6-game losing streak coming into this series Friday night, and Washington having dropped 3 straight. However, Milwaukee has still managed to hold on to the top spot in the NL Central, while the Nats are sitting dead last in the NL East.

Eric Lauer pitches for the Brewers today and had a fairly strong outing in his last matchup, going six strong innings against the Padres. He’s only given up 5 runs over his past 3 starts and has looked solid throughout each of them. He has a sub 2.50 ERA this year and a WHIP just above 1. He has been steadily improving upon his career numbers this year and has been a reliable arm for the Brewers.

Veteran Patrick Corbin is pitching today for the Nationals and has been hit around quite a bit in his last 3 starts, giving up 28 hits in 16.2 innings. Despite this, he has gone 2-1 in his last 3 outings, however he holds an ERA this season just under 7 and w WHIP close to 2. His numbers are significantly worse in the past few seasons in comparison to his career numbers, perhaps marking the beginning of the end for his career.

Dropping six straight is never good, but to give the Brewers credit, these losses did come at the hands of some talented baseball clubs. The losing streak began by dropping 3 straight to the Padres who are always a tough beat, and this followed by losing 3 in a row to the Phillies, a team that has now won 7 straight. The Brewers are an extremely talented baseball club and there’s a reason why they are still atop the NL Central despite this abysmal stretch over their last ten. They seem poised to overcome their recent struggles and perhaps go on a run of their own here to counteract this recent slide.

The Brewers are only -150 favourites today, and I think a large part of that has to do with their recent struggles. However, with Lauer on the mound, and facing a bottom feeder team like the Nationals, I believe the line should be closer to -200. This could be a great value pick if the Brewers bats are able to show up today.

Pick: Brewers ML -150 (DraftKings)

Other notable bets:

Blue Jays @ Tigers: Blue Jays -1.5 -130 (DraftKings): Kevin Gausman is on the mound for the Blue Jays today as they take on the struggling Tigers. Gausman will be looking to bounce back after giving up 9 hits in his previous outing.

Mets @ Angels: Angels ML +115 (DraftKings): The Angels just snapped their longest losing streak in franchise history and I think they’ll be looking to make up for the lost time by stringing together more than a couple of wins in a row.
