MLB Picks: June 17
I’m looking at a couple of value plays today.
Tampa Bay Rays’ right-handed pitcher Shane Baz burst onto the MLB scene late last year, making 3 starts down the stretch and putting up some pretty impressive numbers. He went 2-0 and struck out 18 batters in just over 13 innings of work. So, not surprisingly there was lots of hype about his prospects heading into spring training but unfortunately, he would require arthroscopic elbow surgery and ended up on the injured list for the first two months of the season. He’s back now and made his first start last week, giving up three hits and three walks, pitching just 2.1 innings in a loss to the Twins. So, while one bad outing shouldn’t tarnish his prospects, it is a reminder that injuries play a significant role in sports and Baz’s “what have you done for me lately” stats read 19.29 for ERA and 2.57 for WHIP.
The Rays are coming off the wrong end of a sweep at the hand of the Yankees and are 4-6 in their last 10 games. They are playing just under .500 on road and now head into Baltimore to take on an Orioles team coming off an impressive road series-split with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles racked up 22 runs in the last 3 games of the series, giving them a confidence boost heading back to Camden Yards.
I think the Orioles are a good value play here. They’re .500 at home and have played a fairly tough schedule so far. Their hitters are seeing the ball well and mashing of late. If Dean Kremer can give them a decent start, the Orioles bullpen is solid (top 10 in MLB with a 3.29 ERA in innings 7-thru-9) and can bring it home.
Other games worth betting tonight:
Astros -1.5 +125 (betRivers) vs. White Sox: Framber Valdez has been pitching great and the Astros are still playing like the defending American League Champs. They’re at home and going up against a White Sox team that has been consistently inconsistent and have been finding ways to lose. Good value on the runline here.
