MLB Picks: June 18

By Michael Spiegel

The Yankees and Blue Jays continue their weekend series this afternoon after the Yankees took game 1 with a commanding 12-3 win on Friday night. While last night’s game was full of runs, they’ll be limited today with two gems on the mound. Jameson Taillon for the Yankees and Alek Manoah for the Blue Jays.

Taillon has pitched very well for the Yankees this year; however, he was hit around quite a bit over his last two outings. Over his last two starts, Taillon has given up 7 earned runs and 16 hits and only pitched a combined 9 innings during those games. Taillon has also struggled against the Jays throughout his career, posting a 2-3 record against them since he joined the Yankees last year. Taillon has an ERA over 4 when facing the Jays, and although he has had success against them so far this season, he did face them before their bats got hot.

Alek Manoah has been beyond incredible for the Jays in his young career. He has a 17-3 record, including going 8-1 this season, and has a career WHIP under 1. This year in 12 outings he has an ERA under 1.70 and a WHIP of 0.91. Manoah is looking like a potential Cy Young candidate already. He has also had tremendous success against the Yankees; with an ERA of 1.52 in 4 career outings and has a 2-0 record. This season he has faced the Yankees twice, going 6 innings in both starts and only giving up a combined 1 run. He seems to have all the answers for the Bronx Bombers, and despite how well they have been as of late, I expect his dominance to continue this afternoon.

After an embarrassing loss last night, Manoah and the Blue Jays will be looking to give their home crowd something to cheer for today. With Manoah on the mound silencing the Yankees bats and the Jays looking to even up this series at one game a piece, the Jays should be able to take care of business today against the Yankees. Despite their tough loss last night, they are the money line favourites today, but with Manoah’s ability to dominate Yankees batters and Taillon’s difficulty with the Blue Jays, I’m taking them to cover the spread.

Pick: Yankees @ Blue Jays: Blue Jays -1.5 +155 (LeoVegas)

Other notable bets:

Braves @ Cubs: Braves ML -165 (PointsBet): After the Cubs snapped the Braves’ 14-game win streak last night, they’ll be looking to get right back at it. With Kyle Wright on the mound for the Braves, who has been an absolute stud for them this year, they should have no problem doing so. They should be closer to -200 favourites today.

Rays @ Orioles: Rays -1.5 +105 (bet365):The Rays lost to the O’s yesterday and they’ll be looking to even up the series this afternoon. The pitching matchup heavily favours the Rays with Jeffrey Springs on the mound, and I think they’ll win big today facing the struggling Kyle Bradish.

Rangers @ Tigers: Rangers ML -123 (LeoVegas): A battle of two struggling teams takes place this afternoon, however with how bad the Tigers have been this year, I think the Rangers should be favoured closer to -150. Some good value with a bet on Texas today.
