MLB Picks: June 19
What do I love about baseball? You just never know from day-to-day what you are going to get. Did anyone think on Friday when the Atlanta Braves took their 14 game win streak into Wrigley Field to take on a Chicago team that had lost 10 straight that on Sunday, the Cubs would be in a position to take the brooms to the defending World Series champs. There is no way that should happen but it could. Each day is different in baseball as we all know and one never knows what is going to take place between the foul lines.
With that being said, There’s some value out there today if you look for it. One of the best value picks I see is the game between the Miami Marlins and New York Mets. Sandy Alcantara is arguably the best pitcher in the National League right now. He has not allowed much this season and it will be a challenge for the Mets to get some runs against the Miami righty even though they are the most proficient team in the National League at scoring runs. The Marlins are seen as the underdog in this one and I can certainly understand why when you look at the records of these two teams, but I like Miami to avoid the weekend sweep and take this one.
The Yankees have not only delivered a message to the Blue Jays this weekend, but they have delivered a message to all of baseball. They are just getting rid of the competition. After handing Alex Manoah his 2nd loss of the year, the Yankees go for the sweep today. When you are 49-16, how can you not take the Bronx Bombers to win every time they hit the diamond. Do they have a weak spot? They are strong in every facet of the game and in order to beat them, you have to capitalize on every mistake they make and then some. I will obviously take the Yankees to win, but can they deliver another beating on Toronto. There is nothing to indicate they can’t. I’m going with the Yankees on the runline to cover the -1.5 spread and complete that three-game sweep over a Toronto team that will be definitely wondering what needs to be done to have a shot at catching New York for first in the AL East.
One other game I like today has the Padres in Denver to face the Rockies. The over/under is 12.5 which is a lofty total, but we are talking about Coors Field where high-scoring games are the norm. San Diego has not had a lot of success at Coors going 2-7 in their last 9, but they will have success today. If you want a number, Colorado is 1-8 in their last nine when the o/u has been over 11 or higher. Make it 1-9.
FWIW: It isn’t baseball, but if you are a golf fan, put five bucks on Adam Hadwin to win the US Open. You just never know!
