MLB Picks: June 22

By Rally Kapz

Well folks, a quick look at the calendar and the humidex, tells me that summer has arrived.  That’s great news for MLB fans and today won’t disappoint, as all 30 teams will take to the field.  The action starts early today, as we have a few matinee ballgames on the docket.  So, without further ado, let’s get down to business.

The Red Sox continue their series with the Tigers at Fenway in Boston.  It’s hard to say that any team in the AL East can sneak up on you but Boston has been playing some stellar ball lately.  In early May, they were sitting at 12-22 and last place in the division.  Fast forward to today and they are now 38-31 and in the second wildcard position, just a half game back of Toronto.  The turnaround is due to both hitting and pitching, as they rank 7th overall in both team OPS and team ERA.  Today, Michael Wacha gets the ball.  He’s been solid so far this year, with an ERA of 2.28 and a WHIP just over 1.  As for the Tigers, they come into this game having lost 8 of their last 10 games and they’ve been particularly bad on the road, posting an 8-20 record.  Tarik Skubal gets the start for the Tigers.  While he’s been one of the team’s better starters, he’s coming off a couple of rough outings.  He was hit hard last time out, giving up 5 earned runs vs. Texas, lasting just five innings.  I think there is good value on the runline for this game.

Pick:  Boston Red Sox -1.5 +140 (BetRivers) vs. Detroit Tigers

Other games worth betting today:

Tampa Bay Rays ML +128 (BetRivers) vs. NY Yankees:  Well, the Yankees finally lost a game, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Rays at the Trop last night.  The intensity of the games between these AL East rivals is palpable, even though it’s still June and not September.  These intense games often lead to lower scores, so I was tempted to take the under today, but it’s pegged at just 7 runs, so I’ll stay away from that one.  Instead, there’s some value on Tampa Bay to win this game.  I like the Rays on the moneyline.

NY Mets ML +120 (Betway) at Houston Astros:  One of the matinee games today will see Carlos Carrasco and the Mets take on Luis Garcia and the Astros.  By the way, if you haven’t seen Luis Garcia’s pitching windup, it’s worth a Google search.  Despite his distracting delivery, I think Carrasco and the Mets offer good value on the road.
