MLB Pick: May 15

by Stefan Luciani

Following the Leafs heartbreaking loss to the Lightning last night, it’s fair to say the city of Toronto has a bad case of the blues today. But fear not. It’s a beautiful sunny day, and days like today remind you we are just getting into the heart of what is going to be a very long but exciting baseball season.

It also seems like a very opportunistic moment for the Toronto Blue Jays to have themselves a bit of a run, because, why not? Following quite the hot start, they found themselves in a good old fashioned funk of late, dropping three straight series, and slipping into a five-game skid. They were able to snap the losing streak on Saturday, and it turns out all they needed was the return of the greatest bat in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays (not to mention a hero of the glasses-wearing community) Danny Jansen. Jansen and Teoscar Hernandez both picked up long balls in the Trop on the way to a commanding 5-1 win over the Rays.

So now seems like the perfect time to get hot. They’re back in action today down in St. Petersburg to close out their three-game stretch with a chance to grab their first series win in two weeks. The Jays are going with Alek Manoah (4-0, 1.75 ERA), and they’ll be looking to carry some momentum before they open up a six-game homestand starting tomorrow against Seattle.

Despite their slump, most sportsbooks have the Jays coming in as favourites, with the best valued line at -120 (Caesars). Don’t get me wrong, I consider that a fairly safe bet, but nothing worth doing in life is “safe”...or however the saying goes. I’m feeling spicy today, so I’m taking a leap here and opting for the Jays to cover -1.5 @ +145 (Betway). I’m a dangerous guy, what can I tell you. I like to play Wii without the wrist strap. I microwave my oatmeal in the morning without the microwave cover (sorry mom). Book it folks. Pick: Blue Jays -1.5 @ +145 (Betway).

Other Notable Games

Padres vs Braves o8 @ +100: These are two teams that in their past games, have been putting up some decent offence. The Padres may still be down Fernando Tatis Jr., but have solid bats like Jake Cronneworth and Ha-Seong Kim who have combined for 30 RBIs on the year, as well as Eric Hosmer who has started the season as hot as anybody. The vet is batting a whopping .364 with four dingers and 24 RBIs on the campaign. On the other side, the Braves’ whole lineup one-through-nine are all batting north of .200 with four batters holding at least 15 RBIs. This should easily hit the over.

Betstamp is all about transparency, so whether you want to tail or fade my picks or even just check in on them to see how I’m doing you can find my full documented betting record here. Back to back free pick wins to start us off, but looking to keep pushing tonight to get the account closer to the green.
