MLB Picks: Sept 10
Another Saturday of baseball is upon us. A lot of scoreboard watching is happening. Let’s look at three games today that have some playoff implications.
The Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins meet in Game 2 of a huge three-game series between these AL Central rivals with both looking for a division crown. The winner will be in while the loser will likely be on the outside looking in come playoff time.
Going into this game, Cleveland is 1.5 games ahead of the Chicago White Sox and 2.5 ahead of the Twins.
Triston McKenzie may not have the win-loss record one would like, but his 154 strikeouts, a WHIP of .97 and an ERA of 3.18 is nothing to sneeze at. While he got a no-decision in his last start on Monday, he did allow just three hits but needed 101 pitches to get 17 outs. Keeping the ball in the park is a key for McKenzie as Cleveland is 11-0 in his starts when he prevents the opponent from homering, compared to 3-10 when he permits one or more dingers.
While both teams have not been playing the baseball they like, Cleveland has won 15 of its last 21 against AL Central opponents. They are getting the wins they need inside their divisions. Let’s go with them to make it 16 of their last 22
I wouldn’t put money on this being a World Series preview, but you just never know once the playoffs hit. The Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners meet in an inter-league battle and this should be a great game between two very solid teams.
The one thing Atlanta has going for it right now is experience at this time of year. They have guys that have been through this and while Seattle has a lot of players that came up just short last season, they have a lot of youth that are learning on the fly. Atlanta comes in having won eight straight and they are 13-5 against American League teams this year.
I get the feeling this will be a very close game with the Braves pulling it out at the end. By the way, if looking for a prop bet, feel free to take Atlanta’s Michael Harris to get a hit and score a run. Harris comes into Saturday’s game with a 15-game hit streak. Since August 22, he is 25-55 at the plate with 14 runs.
One last game has the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the New York Yankees. New York certainly isn’t cruising to the finish line. This team is leaking oil and the Rays are right behind them as they go into this game just 3.5 games back. If the Yankees don’t hang on to win the division, it will be one of the biggest collapses in recent memory. Aaron Judge is still doing his thing, but the rest of the team have been mediocre as they are hitting a collective .222 going into Friday’s game since the All-Star break.
Tampa isn’t having a problem with the bats and with the Yankees playing the way they are, I don’t know how you can really take them. They need to start winning some games and winning them because of players other than Judge to start being taken seriously again.
I’m all over the Rays in this one.
Enjoy the games!
