UFC San Diego: Vera vs. Cruz

By Ryan Nadrajan

This Saturday the UFC heads down to San Diego, California for a Fight Night card headlined by an anticipating battle at bantamweight between Marlon “Chito” Vera and future Hall of Famer Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz.

Training alongside Dominick Cruz at Alliance MMA in San Diego is Angela Hill (13-12) who will look to keep her record above .500 after Saturday night. A tough night lies ahead of her as she is paired up with Lupita Godinez (8-2) who has made herself look like a future contender early in her career.

Hill has earned herself a reputation of being the “anytime, anywhere” type of fighter but it hasn’t played out well for her in the last couple of years. Heading into the bout she is 1-5 in her last 6 and now at the age of 37, there seems to be almost no light at the end of the tunnel when facing a young and hungry 28-year-old in Godinez.

“Loopy” looked amazing in her last fight when she rag-dolled Ariane Carnelossi for15 minutes back in May. Godinez will probably strike for Hill for the opening minute or two before she takes care of business on the mat. I am all over Godinez on this one, and she knows how important this win will be for her so I expect a dominant performance. A victory would propel her into the rankings and would all but certainly set her up with a top-10 opponent.

Bruno Silva (22-7) found himself on an impressive seven-fight win streak all with TKO/KO finishes before running into the man who will headline MSG in November for the middleweight title, Alex Pereira. He now lines up against a submission specialist (understatement) in Geerald Meerschaert (34-15-1).

“GM3” has a knack for pulling off subs in fights where he is behind on the scorecards similar to Paul Craig. With 26 professional subs to his name, he will look for another one against Silva whose weakest point in his game is defending submissions, having 5 losses on his record via the method.

Bruno Silva has insane power in his hands and we’ve seen Geerald Meerschaert’s chin start to fade away recently. Bruno is a slick striker and I think he catches GM3 inside the distance but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a smart pin-point decision victory after coming off a loss.
