UFC Vegas 58: Dos Anjos vs. Fiziev

By Ryan Nadrajan

The UFC heads back to the Apex in Las Vegas this Saturday for a Fight Night card headlined by a pair of lightweights. UFC veteran Rafael Dos Anjos will take on the Kyrgyz striking sensation Rafael Fiziev. Set for some preliminary action is an intriguing matchup at middleweight between Cody Brundage and Tresean Gore.

Cody Brundage (7-2) is 1-1 in the UFC and could very easily be 0-2. In his last outing against Dalcha Lungiambula back in March, he pulled off one of the most surprising turn of events of 2022. The fight was very close to being stopped as Brundage took some heavy blows up against the fence. Brundage managed to survive the onslaught and was able to secure a guillotine to force Lungiambula to tap in round one. An abysmal decision by Lungiambula was made to go for a takedown when he had Brundage dazzled, which is why I consider it a very lucky win for Brundage. This weekend he will look to rely on his wrestling foundations to dictate where the fight takes place, as he will not want to stand and trade with Tresean Gore.

Tresean Gore (3-1) comes from TUF Season 29, where he was supposed to face Bryan Battle in the finals but withdrew due to a knee injury. Upon recovering he made his UFC debut against Battle and fell short by decision. Gore displayed flashes of his power in the bout, but appeared gun-shy and didn’t have enough volume. He did show some solid takedown defense as he stuffed 7 of 8 attempts. I have to think that him moving camps from ATT Atlanta down to the MMA Lab and Fight Ready in Arizona, will help him get to the next step in the octagon.

This is Tresean Gore’s fight to lose. I don’t see how Brundage can win this fight other than a wrestling dominant decision. Gore will be hard to keep down on the mat if the fight does go there, and if Brundage shows the striking he has in his last couple of fights he will get tagged. Gore knows he needs to make a statement after the disappointing debut as he knows the UFC is willing to get behind him because he does have a lot of potential.

Pick: Tresean Gore -138 (Betway)

Another bet to consider:

Said Nurmagomedov/Rafael Fiziev Parlay -103 (BetVictor) - Nurmagomedov is a highly touted-prospect and is facing Douglas Silva de Andrade who has had problems with similar fighting styles in the past. Fiziev holds a 95% TDD which will help him keep the fight standing where he can outstrike and land the cleaner shots against RDA.
