UFC 275: Teixeira vs. Prochazka

By Ryan Nadrajan

The UFC is heading to Kallang, Singapore this Saturday for UFC 275. The event will feature two titles up for grabs. The main event features 43-year-old light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira defending his strap against the Polish rising contender Jiri Prochazka, and the co-main is set for the women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko versus Talia Santos. Also on the card is the 2020 rematch of the greatest womens fight in MMA history, Weili Zhang against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. It’s a card you don’t want to miss.

Slotted for some preliminary action are Portuguese Andre Fialho (16-4) and Australian Jake Matthews (17-5). Fialho made his debut in January this year when he stepped on 11 day’s notice to replace Muslim Salikhov to face Michel Pereira. Although he found himself on the wrong end of the decision, he impressed many with his efforts on short notice. After the loss, he has put together back-to-back first-round knockouts of Miguel Baeza and Cameron VanCamp. Now with 13 knockouts in 16 victories, he looks to keep the ball rolling in what will mark his fourth fight in less than five months.

When Jake Matthews first arrived on the scene there was a lot of hype surrounding the man from the “land down under”. He has already fought under the banner 15 times at just 27 years of age. He put together a three-fight win streak before running into Sean Brady in his last outing when he was submitted via arm triangle late into the third round in March of 2021.

It’s no secret Matthews will look to utilize his wrestling to get the fight to the canvas, an area which we have not seen Fialho be tested since entering the promotion. Fialho has fought some decent wrestlers before coming to the UFC and he should be able to withstand the takedown attempts early on. If Matthews can’t use his top game I don’t see any other avenue he could take to win the fight. Jake Matthews will also be giving up a slight 1” reach and height advantage. While Matthews has never been knocked down in the UFC, he has never faced anyone with the power of Fialho. I think Andre Fialho is at a time where his overall game is coming into form with all the momentum he is building up from quick knockouts and by staying active. When a fighter is as hungry as he is to get into the octagon
with such frequency, it usually pays good dividends. I am all over Fialho on this line, one that I expected to be much wider when the odds first came out.

Pick: Fialho -147 (Bet99)
