NBA Preview: Reaction to the NBA Offseason Thus Far

By Lior Lampert

Even in the offseason, the NBA never sleeps. Since the very moment the Warriors won the championship, there has been plenty of drama and storylines that have resulted in some big names finding themselves calling new cities home. While there are still so many moving pieces that we will see unfold in due time, let’s evaluate and see who are the biggest winners and losers of the offseason to date.

The biggest winners of this offseason to date (in my eyes) are the Boston Celtics. Their acquisition of Malcom Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari addressed two major areas of need: finding another point guard to take some of the ball handling and playmaking pressure off of Marcus Smart, and another capable scorer to come off the bench. In addition, they are adding steady and experienced veteran presences in the process for a more than reasonable price tag. The Celtics are the reigning Eastern Conference champions and these moves have deservingly made them the favourites to get back to the championship and win the 2023 NBA Finals.

The loser of the offseason has to without a doubt be the Brooklyn Nets. They mortgaged their future to make the Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden experiment work and it is now beginning to blow up in their face. With the Houston Rockets owning their first-round pick in each of the next five seasons and both Durant and Irving requesting trades, the team is forced to start what is likely to be a long rebuild.

When Irving and Durant made the decision to pair up in Brooklyn and have James Harden join them, they instantly became heavy favourites to win the championship each of the last two years. Now, all they have to show for it is one playoff series victory while being in a salary cap nightmare and having zero first-round draft picks through 2027. As a longtime Knicks fan, I am writing this with a smile on my face: buckle up Brooklyn, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

The Durant/Irving trade requests are holding up a lot of potential offseason trades and signings. It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out – where will DeAndre Ayton end up? Will the Cavs trade Colin Sexton? Do the Pacers finally trade Myles Turner? Where will both Irving and Durant end up? I am excited to see how it all turns out.
