NBA Picks: June 08

By Aamir Jaffer

After an abysmal Game 1 fourth quarter collapse, the Golden State Warriors showed the NBA world why they have been to the finals six times in the last eight seasons.

After getting off to a slow start early in Game 2, the Warriors found their rhythm and busted the game wide open in the third quarter. Stephen Curry led the charge with 29 points, backed by a sturdy supporting cast of Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, and Klay Thompson. With the Warriors leading 52-50 at the half, game 2 seemed poised for a tight finish that would come down to the wire. Instead, Curry scored 14 of his 29 points in the third, supercharging the Warriors to multiple double-digit runs following no response from the Celtics. Despite Boston’s timeouts and adjustments, it was clear after Jordan Poole’s halfcourt buzzer beater three at the end of the 3rd quarter that the series would head to Boston at one apiece.

Despite the Celtics letting the game slip away in the third, they are still the number 1 ranked defense in the league, which we saw living proof of in Game 1, holding the Warriors to a mere 16 points in the fourth quarter. For the first time in a decade for Celtics fans, TD Garden will host an NBA Finals game and the atmosphere will be electric. Throughout the playoffs the Celtics have proven their resilience by sweeping the Nets, knocking out the defending champs (Bucks), and beating the best team in the Eastern Conference (Heat).

Nevertheless, if anyone can stop the Warriors explosive offense, it’s the Celtics defense. Heading home into TD Garden, the Celtics should have all the momentum with the crowd behind them. Led by Jason Taytum and Jalen Brown’s offense supported by an elite defense, I have full confidence in the Boston Celtics despite the NBA Finals experience gap. In the end, I think this will be one of the best finals in recent memory, with world class talent on each side of the ball for both teams. While this is anyone’s series to win, I’m riding with the Celtics for Game 3 minus the points.

Pick: BOS -3.5 +101 (Odds via Sports Interaction)

Other Picks for Tonight’s Game:

Al Horford over 11.5 points -110 (bet365): With the most playoff games without a finals appearance and only scoring 2 points in Game 2, I expect the veteran to have a bounce back game. With the lackluster game 2 performance, I think the number 11.5 is a little bit too low.

Stephen Curry under 28.5 points -115 (bet365): After dropping 34 and 29 points in the first two games, I expect the Celtics defense to play Curry a little bit tighter. While I usually don’t usually go under with the best shooter in the league, I think 28.5 is slightly inflated due to Curry’s previous 2 games.
