NBA Picks: June 16

By Aamir Jaffer

After winning game 5 in the Bay Area, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors are one win away from another NBA championship. Trailing by 12 points in the second half, the Celtics dominated the 3rd quarter and brought it to within 1. Nonetheless, the Andrew Wiggins led Warriors (yes…you read that right), managed to pull away in the fourth to take a 3-2 series lead.

After posting monster stats through the first four games of 34, 29, 31, and 43 points respectively, Curry cooled off in game 5. Going 0 of 9 from beyond the arch and putting up a below average 16 points, it’s hard to believe that the Warriors won simply by looking at Curry’s production. However, as I have stressed time and time again, if Curry gets adequate help he needs from his supporting cast, the Warriors are poised for success. With Wiggins and Klay putting up 26 and 21 points respectively, the onus wasn’t solely on Curry to lead the team to victory. Followed by Gary Payton (15 pts) and Jordan Poole (14pts), for the first time this series, the Warriors truly exemplified the full power of their offensive depth.

On the other hand, it almost seemed as if the Boston Celtics would make another spectacular comeback similar to game 1. In the 3rd quarter, the Celtics were led by Tatum’s hot hand and managed to take a few single digit leads before the Warriors stormed back into action. Despite an exceptional double-double performance from Tatum (27pts & 10 rebounds), the Warriors ability to distribute the ball offensively and not solely rely on Curry proved to be the difference in the game.

Onto the Garden for game 6, the Warriors have two opportunities to become world champions once again.  Despite the Warriors' experience, the Celtics have proved their defensive ability and overall resilience throughout the playoffs, arguably having the toughest path to the finals. With the spread at 4 favouring the Celtics, I’ll be going with Boston for game 6 minus the points. The way the series has played out so far, it's only fitting it will go the distance to a game 7.

Pick: BOS -4 -104 (Odds via Cool Bet)

Other Picks for Tonight’s Game:

Jalen Brown Over 24.5 Points (-115): After putting up a below average 18 points in game 5, I look for Jalen Brown to be the offensive x factor as the Celtics are facing elimination.
